Default Piranha TX-42

Ever since i saw it on Forgworld.com, I've always wanted to get one.
but how effective is it on the battlefield?
is the Piranha TX-42 even worth getting?

A big discussion cropped up about this not terribly long ago. Here's a link to the thread:
http://forums.tauonline.org/index.php?topic=42333.0

To sum it up breifly, it was pretty much concluded that the TX-42 looks nice, but very likely isn't worth its points in most games. The only weapons that should prove to be useful are missile pods (which are probably quite good, however we have better access to them on Crisis suits for a cheaper cost), and plasma rifles (but they make the cost soar, so it's quite possibly debatable).

Anyway, take a read for yourself - both sides were argued quite well if I remember.

One of the main advantages of the TX-42 is that you can mount Battlesuit weapons (ex. Fusion blasters, Plasma Rifles, Missilepods) outside the Elite slots. That is a huge plus IMO because you can invest the elite slots in other units (ex Steathsuits).

I think that it is almost useless Because sure you get an extra elite weapon but at the cost of 80 points I think. A crisis battle suit can have 2 at the cost of around 25 points or 35 if your taking
PR and a base cost of 25. They also have the ability to deep strike too.

I think that it is interesting as a weapons platform, especially the missile pods, considering that they can strike almost anywhere, with a 36" range.

Cheers!

Well, considering the cost of a standard Piranha with Targeting Array, and a Fusion Blaster, this thing runs you 5 points more for a Twin-linked Fusion Blaster, and extra armor to the side. Sure, you lose the Gun Drones, but for it's cost and it's reliability to hit with those Fusion Blasters, I'd say it's a fine sacrifice to make for Anti-tank hunting. It also makes you less reliant on Markerlights to paint your target for your Piranhas. If I had those extra points to spare, I'd probably get two.

TL BS 4 is only effectively 5.33...not really that huge of a gain over the 4 you compared it to. Nice, though. However, the lack of the two drones is effectively another 20pt hit...you now have an eighty-odd pt fragile open topped vehicle that can only really make it's points back if it pops a vehicle...and a decent one at that, a rhino just isn't enough.

What? Twin-linked BS4 hits 89% of the time! That's a vast improvement over 67%. That fact, combined with the idea of the Melta rule, allows for some serious tank killing; front, side, or rear. Considering the average Pen roll is 15, I'd take that any day over two extra S5 shots!
