Default Kroot in hybrid force

As stated, I use a hybrid tau force with my static forces bieng my broadsides(geared with targeting array, they hardly ever miss)
sniper drones

Normally I use a firewarrror unit to guard my broad sides by parking them close,

In futer games I was thinking of adding a kroot pack for this role since thier cheaper and can help in hand to hand if my oppoent deepstrikes cc units on my broadsides.

My real question is are kroot in a large pack good for hybrids in the form of
1) Ambushers
2) tree hidding snipers
3) speed bumps

I would like to add krotox to the pack to give a long range attack with decient str at the expence of infiltrate, and If this is done would it limit the kroot pack to once again escorting/supporting the broadsides.

If any one has experience with using kroot in these roles could you tell me what worked, what didnt and other potential roles these guys can play before I go spend more cash on a krootox and hounds. ( I already have 20 kroot and a shaper)

Thanks for looking at this issue.

I use mine as a distraction force wayy out there in the flank holding some woods, or some cover.

They shotty with their pseudo bolters and do minor damage... until some enemy veers off to deal with them - good for us, or the enemy ignores them and they keep plinking away, while holding on to realestate.... good for us as well

in general, don expect more from them than what you paid for them.

True, so true. Kroot cost so little, you won't miss them. Don't bother, cause they will run away. While having good attacks, they suffer from poor BS and poor initiative. They have no grenades, no armor, and rapid fire weapons. This means they will go last in almost all combats, they will die to any shooting wounds if not in cover, and they can't move forward shoot and then charge the enemy (rapid fire or charge only).

I use mine, but only to distract

I use my Kroot for a few different things.

1) Infiltration pushback

2) Broadside defense

3) Infiltrate into table quarters

1) I have won games because of their ability to pushback infiltrators. You have to hope that you place first, but taking advantage of this can help a lot. Plus it keeps those nasty cc infiltrators farther away.

2) I am thinking of putting a Krootox in this squad too. I have one model and I've never used it. Plus my broadsides usually get tied up by scarabs, and the Krootox instakills them. The Kroot countercharge is great, and they do very well against scarabs.

3) drop them in the rear of the enemy deployment zone, and your opponenet either ignores them (giving you the table quarter), or spends time destroying them (and not the rest of your army). I won a combat patrol in a tournament just because of this tactic. I stuck the Kroot behind a piece of difficult area terrain, in the enemies table quarter. It took three turns to route them, and my opponent was unable to kill anything else. Not bad for 70 points.

Kroots don't have grenades yet they have them on the model.

Personnally, I'd give them better Close Combat stats. Like more attack, more initiative, better strenght...
And freakin grenades!!

The poor initiative is easily taken care of by letting the enemy assault YOU.

Kroot in cover count as having Initiative 10 when assaulted, which means that you get a crapload of attacks back before they even hit you.

I infiltrate them WAY forward and let my enemy assault them with his combat troops, softening them up before they get anywhere near my main army. Also, the Krootox is best used when you take a full three, thus enhancing the unit's points-per-gun ratio, as well as the hit rate (BS3 is crap when you have something you REALLY need dropped).

Kroot are also good as counter charge units. Put a squad of kroot behind some FW's to charge the enemy when the Tau lose combat and fall back. This is a good threat to most non-combaty units, unlike genestealers. Those you just want to fall back and shoot the bloddy hell out of the.

Another way they work well is with stealth teams infiltrating together. This force can hold choke points, table quarters, and Aulma off you opponent into making stupid mistakes liek sending troops to deal with them. And if you throw a fusion blaster on the Stealths they can bust some tanks on the way ;D

Edit: thank you I forgot a word there.

Kroot are best used when in cover and genestealers are assulty units!!!

I think that if since kroot are able to see 12" of tarrain they can be used as snipers in a small area. Kroottox guns have the same range as kroot rifles and are rapid fire.

Actually, the Kroot Gun mounted on a Krootox has DOUBLE the range of a kroot rifle.

The only problem with the 12" terrain ability is that most forest terrain (at least where I play) is usually designed too small to really take advantage of this ability. However, if you can use it near choke points where the enemy HAS to go, it will really steam up their troops.

And rapid-firing kroot guns are just nasty, if/when you can get it. ;D

I will often take a small unit of kroot just to act as a nuissance. If they shoot at it, they've made something like 70 or 80 pts. I know tau are supposed to value life, even of their auxiliaries, but I as a player certainly prefer my kroot being shot at than the fire warriors or suits or whatever. And if they don't fire at them, well those shoota equivilents have to kill something some time
