It depends on whether you are playing Mech or Static. Static Tau like a nice open field with a spot of cover and structures around the edges. Mech Tau tend to like a wide distribution of area terrain or structures distributed over the entire board.

Always enforce the idea of taking turns to set pieces of terrain. Never allow your opponent to set it up, even he if is trying to make it symmetrical. I have been screwed over before by unscrupulous Tyranid players doing that. They will make it "even" by making sure that the terrain is evenly distributed in all four quarters, but very little of it around the edges.

Cover is the biggest friend of them, but a wise commander can use most of the available options to his best!

Indeed.. unless your playing cityfight, then jsut have everyone set up at the same time, otherwise it takes too long.

Mech tau favor lots of terrain since they can either glide over it or use it for cover. Static likes a bit of cover for the tender units, but not too much so that there are good fire lanes.

cover is the most important factor for Tau, IMO. I get screwed by weirdly placed terrain that my opponent places and then scatters using that stupid Fantasy rule... grrr.... hate stupid terrain

ranting done

Cheers!

I think that as long as you can efficently crisscross your opening firing lanes and then move around to maximise your cover/ firing lanes no battlefield should be too difficult to play on.

I know how you feel. My neighbor plays 'nids and always sets up terrain so I have plenty of terrain for my meq units to fly right over. The thing is, he had a nice, open field to fire at me right after[/i] I got over it, I couldn't shoot at him 1st turn with my FWs and he didn't have to make any pesky difficult terrain checks.

But after I got my FoF going and hammerheaded him, he was soo sad at the loss of his genestealers he quit.

Another thing to beware against 'nids and terrain: Lictors.
