Can't quite see why anyone would bother with Gua'vessa auxillaries in a static tau force. Am i missing the point?

A few reasons, cheap markerlights, or a squad with EMP grenades to take out tanks.

change their wapons for PR for 5 pts each 1 point cheaper than a fire warrior so a squad of 12 is saving you 12pts

Fire Warriors in a Static Tau list don't like to move very much. It doesn't really matter for Gue'vesa. So they can run forward along the edges and plant EMP grenades on things. That is really the only use I have ever had for them.

i thought it was a max of 2 in the squad for +5 points, and a markerlight for anoither +10. I think they're 6 points apiece(going off memory here). So a min/max. of 6 men would cost you 56 points. 4 points saved. That gets you 2 PR shots and a ML with 3 Lasguns. A min/max fore Fire Warriors with a HW multitracker costs 85, which gives 6 PR shots and a ML shot.

Overall, they're a cheap troop-based markerlight with 3 ablative wounds and a pair of PRs. Any more than 6 in a squad isn't going to be as points-effective compared to a Firewarrior. MAYBE against lots of units without saves, but even then, I'd rather have 6" more range.

I play hybrid and they are excellent... as meatshields. They get killed, and I stay happy.

they are just cheap meatshields, unless I use them in my revamp of gue'vesa, which means more than one squad per FOC chart, which I wouldn't mind because right now they even suck as meatshields :P too few models

Cheers!
