With this army, I wanted a general Tau army. I had no specific strategy-each unit just works. I have 3 Hammerheads for heavy weapons that are mobile. I also included 3 groups of Firewarriors with Devilfish for good firepower and mobility. The leaders have Shield Drones to shield themselves for a little against any incoming fire. This'll make them last longer. I included a Stealth Team in order to just provide an annoyance. Their 9 shots will kill something and they will last awhile. The leader also has a markerlight in order to target important units. Last, the Commander just provides some forepower. So, how is it???

hq - scrap bodygaurds and use your 2 free elit slots to fill up with the crisis suits there if i were you, also make them simple fireknife combos.This is the best against an unknown oppoenent and as for no drones, their mobility should serve as adequate protection anyway.

with the shas'o, just make him a standard fire knife, you won't need the shield gen as he is now an IC and gun drones arent really worth the points IMO

elites - you have 4 stealth suits here for 172 points! take a full 6 man squad, drop the markerlight, stealths need to be on the move constantly to be used to best effect, bonding for them is useful though for an extra 10 points

as for troops i see way too many upgrades for a fairly small no. of fire warriors, take 12 man squads, bond them and take a shas'ui. If you take a devilfish then just give it decoy launchers and thats it, its totally up to you and your style of play how many with fishes you take, i'd take two if i were you in 1850 points to make the best use out of a dual spearheaded FoF attack.

As for the HH's i think this is a case of way too many upgrades once again! Keep it nice and simple and use the upgrades that will really be needed.
Also, as you have 3 why not make one toting a ion cannon for anti-marine and for many other 3+ save units.

So, I've suggested refining your list into this -

42 has it mostly how I would do it, but from his list myself I'd take 3 of the stealths, Upgrade the commander to Shas'El saving 25pts and add 2 crisis suits and give the Fishes DL.

then you have a much more rounded force less weak vs the marine armies which are what Tau have trouble with.

Perhaps swap all those DC with drones for a drone unit instead? this way they can act as an bodyguard for your commander, and also dropthe HQ to an el to save 25pts!

I dont know why people use drones as a bodyguard, can someone explain it to me?

they have different use weapons than the 'El so either make his useless or thirs less useful, and if they are an IC squad, crisi do that job just as well, it just baffles me :P

well.
You take the gun drone squad as a seperate unit. As it is fast attack it deploys last. so after you placed out the entire army, place the gun drones between the enemy and your HQ, this way you keep him out of harms way for the first round!

So its not an exact bodyguard but they protect him for the first round I you should lose it!

I don't use drones myself, but I would not want to waste my Crisis suits protecting the commander. It's not like they are all that much cheaper than he is. I keep him out of sight around buildings, and that has been all the protection he needs. We don't all use that much jungle, so direct LOS usually means more than burying units in the trees.

A single crisis will set you back 60+ points and is dead with one S8+ shot. A squad of drones 8 would cost 96 pts but takes a minimum of 2 shots to force a morale check and upto 8 shots to wipe out. The drones seem like a lot better IC screen to me. They can keep up with the commander and serve as a decent buffer against virtually anything. You can even attach him to the unit which isn't that bad: Sure he gets nailed by their majority toughness but how often is someone going to manage 9 wounds from a single unit's firing and force him to make an armor save (which is 3+ anyways)? I just don't see the 1/6 increase in wound chance to be much of a risk compared to having someone blow a crisis away with a missile launcher and then shoot your commander next with a lascannon..... Or drop a pie plate of doom on both of them. :'(

As for the weapons clashing, I'm not sure I follow - A FK 'el can target infantry where the addition of 8 TL S5 shots are nothing to shake a stick at or he can target vehicle sides or backs which once again S5 shots aren't that bad. Against AV10 vehicles you're a lot more effective. You can pop KoS ork trukks like there's no tomorrow. Personally, I'd rather have 8 more potential damaging shots than none. If the commander doesn't join them they don't even have to fire at the same target so that's not even an issue in many cases. What exactly clashes?
