Not really. It is more of a support vehicle. It was orginally an anti-aircraft system.

I don't think so. as Khanaris said, It was originally an anti-aircraft platform. Seekers aren't Ordnance, seekers aren't blast, and I don't think (fluff-wise) skimmers would be any good as artillary. The recoil would do something nasty, smashing the underside to the ground like a pancake.

I of course disagree. The skyray is artillery as the modern day MLRS system is artillery. Its practically the same system. Its just extreme accurate artillery.

Artillery in modern military is just large caliber cannons or missiles that are operated by crew.

In wh40k terms, it does not fire by itself without a markerlight and does not cause a big boom, but most likely fluff wise both of these could occur.

Except that the Skyray only carries small missiles that are not really designed for long-range bombardment. In contrast, the MLRS is not designed for direct engagement, and its primary munitions are much more destructive than a Seeker Missile. You would not call a US army vehicle an artillery system if all it carried were six small anti-tank missiles. The normal classification for the Skyray is as a "point-defense gunship". When the Tau want an actual artillery platform, they are generally going to go with either the much heavier Scorpionfish, a missile platform built on the Orca chassis, or the Stingray, an earlier artillery platform based on the Skyray chassis but with much heavier missiles. They can also use Mantas for this purpose.

"Artillery" really refers more to a platform's usage. Skyrays were never meant for over-the-horizon bombardment in the same manner as the real-world MLRS and many Imperial Guard systems (Deathstrike Missile Launchers, for example). It wasn't until the Tau encountered the Imperium in force that they began to understand the need for this sort of system, at which point they developed the Stingray and then the Scorpionfish (both of which are only fieldable in the trial Epic list). In terms of modern vehicles, the Skyray would have more in common with the M1097 Avenger than it would the MLRS. That is my take on it, anyway.

In terms of fluff, they really do need Markerlights for Seeker Missiles, but the larger munitions all contain complicated drone-guided navigation. And some of the aircraft can also mark targets. But Seeker Missiles are not fragmentation warheads, so they are not going to produce much of an explosion. The Tau have submunition missiles that are designed to do that, but they are only available in Epic.

I think Skyray a scout tank than altilery. They do carry seeker missile but their main role is to move forward, paint the target then let the air caste drop JDAM or JSOD from orbit. 6 seekers is not enough even for smallest egagement.
