Is having a Fearless Tau unit useful? Sure.
Is it nice being able to re-roll a moral test, to get away from a bad situation, from a cheap model that is flying inside a Devilfish with some fearless firewarriors? Sure.
Is he a great choice for the cheapest HQ option to get some Ld10 goodness? Again, Sure.
Is an Ethereal an easy way to get Ld10 on some Target Lock using Broadsides? Oh for Sure.
Ethereals stop your Stealth Suits from failing after taking 2 casualties and help them to regroup when below 50% with bonding. Well worth it, Sure.
My Shas'O magically failed a Ld10 check and is near the board edge. Thank goodness my little Ethereal changed his mind. Sure!

My and 42's opinions

but no, they arent a good leader, a budgert Fireknife 'El is much safer and does more IMO for a good Tau army without imposing restrictions and unwanted hassle.

I gree with dizzy, they are good in some situations but if they die its over for your army cause they fallback for the rest of the game. Thx Dizzy.

I take them only in games of 1500 or more, never less. (1500 is kinda low, but if I have tons of fw's.... yes, he's VERY useful)
I even converted mine, although he needs some paint before I can show him here. Basically, he has an "ethereal banner" for added inspiration

BIG GAMES ONLY!

no problem, its what I do, theyre decent in 2500pts+ as you can have a large stationary firebase to keep him safe.

put him in a fish with some fw's. That's what I do if my firebase protection is lacking.

bad Idea, with the new entanglement rules Fishes are very dangerous for the Etheral, if it gets shot down he's out in the open and pinned, Dead in other words ;D

far too risky, they get dismounted if its penetrated(unlikely) at all and if its destroyed he's in real trouble, that and you cant get the full use of your squad as you have to baby it :

nah, you don't baby the squad, you use it! It's unexpected to have a squad of fw's assault, so the warriors FoF and rapid fire under the fish. When the enemy closes in, but can't assault, the fishes peal away, long range support fire blasts apart the unit to be assaulted, and the mayhem begins!

Warning; don't try this against specialists, EVER. (gaurd work great)

I suppose you could try that against other Tau... or grots? ;D

Though I admit I've charged a squad or two in my time with some warriors with an ethereal. It was a great way to take down a single plague marine left from the shooting phase with a powerfist who would otherwise have been a huge problem. It also worked great on some orks before who had a Nob waiting to charge the next turn. At least it can deny a +1 attack and armour saves win when it comes to an initiative fight (S3 orks... hah, lots of 4's to roll and 4+ saves work quite good compared to 6+).
