Default Noobie Question

I'm reading my Codex (Tau) and I can't see why you cannot add a Devilfish without pathfinders yet my Army Build Software won't allow it. Am I missing something here?

Thanx!

Well, are you trying to create a Devilfish without a squad it transports? If that is the case, you can't do it. You have to have a squad being transported by the 'fish. Not just a plain 'fish.

If you want to have a 'Fish separately, just field it with a Firewarrior squad and operate both of them independently. Indeed costly, if you dont want Firewarriors, but no other way possible (at least I think so* 8) ).

EDIT - or cheaper would be to take a Pathfinder squad (that HAS to have Devilfish, no go without it) - would be 48 points (4 models mimimum) versus 60 for Firewarriors (6 models minimum).

The Devilfish itself is a Dedicated Transport (see rulebook), which means it must be taken along with a squad, not as a standalone unit (or tank in this case).

Edit: here it is, see this post. Check page 62 of the rulebook, and also note that the codex entry lists it as a "Dedicated Transport" - the tab on the side.

Just for the sake of clarity:

Devilfish together with the troop it is carrying (or not, depends on you ) occupies only one TROOP slot in the Field Organization Chart (FOC). So there you have 2 Units - say a Firewarrior squad and the Devilfish, costing only one FOC slot.

To Def3nd3r:
I guess he means "Army Builder".

Why would you want to take a Fish without troops? What Outside-the-box thinking are you doing? What potentially brilliant tactic are you working on?

And don't you have to pay for a Fish with Pathfinders?

There were more than a few very heated discussions some time ago about some members who wanted to take Devilfish without troops. I don't really get why you would want to do that, but some people do apparently. But you can't, whether its trying to take it without Firewarriors or Pathfinders you can't. What I could see is wanting to take Pathfinders without their mandatory Devilfish, especially now since it doesn't benefit from the Scouts rule.

Eh, Ive played around with some ridiculously skimmer heavy lists. They're fun, but realistically, minimizing everything else just to get massive amounts of warfish just isn't effective.

That said, it's possible to get 13 heavy skimmers into a single force org chart. It'll cost you 1755 points base, plus your required HQ(I suggest a tank-buster, deepstriked in. Obviously, you'll have a PF DF on the table, after all) I highly suggest it as an entertaining list if you have a deep love of skimmers. =P

In Army Builder, the Devilfish is an optional upgrade under the Fire Warriors entry and an automatic upgrade for the Pathfinders. Devilfish may never be fielded alone, so they don't show up as their own entry in Army Builder.
