On another note. Welcome to Tau Online.

Like elflord said that should have been posted in the tau board. Read the forum rules and you'll be set.

That's sort of like asking "Is a hammer useful?"

Yes, but not if you aren't trying to drive a nail into a piece of wood.

Kroot have thier uses, but if you're strapped for cash then you might want to jsut stick to Fire Warriors.

Kroot are good "pill box" units, meaning that if you get them into cover they shoot just as good as Fire Warriors and have essentially Bolters, so they pack the same fire power as Marines except in up to 20 model units. Thet're decent combat troops but only if you feel you have a decent chance of winning first round and even better when complimented by Kroothounds. 2 Attacks minimum (because of the Kroot rifle) means that they have 3 on the charge, and that can be a lot, but average toughnes and strength means that they usually dont' kill much. That also have lousy armor ONLY if you get a Shaper and spend an extra point each - not worth in IMO.

I find I like to use them to be shooting units that compliment my Fire Warrior placement. If I can get them into cover, especially trees, than they stay there until the enemy deal with them or ignore them. Larger Kroot units promote the former and smaller units promote the latter.

I've also found that people often forget that Kroot can see through and move through trees better than any other unit in the game, so this can be advantageous.

And they're cheap. Always a plus.

Kroot advantages;

experts in woods
good at shooting (not QUITE as good as marines model for model, but BETTER point for point)
good at assault (2 attacks base at st 4!)
infiltrate
kroot hounds
krootox?
cheap/numbers

Kroot disadvantages;

no armor worth discussing
medoicre ld
vulnerable to flamers/blasts
worked by cc specialists

I love to use kroot for two purposes;
Inflitrate into decent cover and return fire (at least 5+), strike first when enemy assaults into cover.

Charge forward under the cover of my guns; kroot have the numbers to take casualties, and can both shoot and assault decently. Perfect tool for hitting a defensive position, ESPECIALLY in cityfight with plenty of cover.

Everything considered, kroot are very versatile and useful in most situations. I have always been a fan of getting more bang for your buck (or points, in this case) and kroot are an excellent deal for what you get. At just a little more than a gaurdsmen a kroot warrior is very cost effective, especially effective when placed in cover to give him a save.

this should probably be put under "know yourself" for kroot, and any topics about kroot in the future referenced there for answers.
