Default Target Lock on Battlesuits - targeting question.

From what I can tell, the Target Lock on a vehicle allows the vehicle to target more than one enemy unit in a single turn. True?

But the Target Lock option for a BattleSuit does not - it only allows the battlesuit to fire at a different target than the unit it is with.

So...

Do all BattleSuits in a unit of BattleSuits need to be equipped with Target Locks, if any of the models takes one?

And, does it make more sense to arm each BattleSuit with one anti-armour weapon and one anti-infantry weapon, or to make each suit a purpose built machine?

For example - which would be better?

BattleSuit - twinlinked Plasma Rifle and targeting arrray.
BattleSuit - twinlinked Burst Cannon and target lock.

or...

BattleSuit - Plasma Rifle, Burst Cannon, target lock.
BattleSuit - Plasma Rifle, Burst Cannon, targeting array.

These may not be the best examples, but I hope you get what I'm trying to ask.

In the first example, if one of the BattleSuits is destroyed, you lose all your anti-armour or anti infantry capablities. In the second, you can lose a suit, but still have both types of weapons.

You nominate one target as the squads target. Then anyone with a target lock may target a different target.

Depending on your tactic and your ennemie, you be the judge.

I personnally prefer a suit armed with Plasma rifle, missil pod and shield gen + HW multitracker.
That way, my suit can fire at anything and kill anything. The 3+ invulnerable save of the Shield gen is usefull when being fired at by Eldars, Necrons and Wichs Hunters that use weapons that ignor armors.

well, you do know your suits will only be able to fire one weapon each right(Due to the lack of a Multi-Tracker).

And the suit itself will be firing at a different target, not just a weapon. So I believe making one suit anti-tank and the other anti-infantry would be better(Missile Pod and Burst cannon, or Plasma Rifle).

thats a 4+ inv. save for the shield drones, and he could get a MT, if he upgraded his target lock suit to shas'vre right?

I really suggest just taking montats instead of target locks, and different suits with different roles, provided your force org permits.

Target locks are mostly a high point thing. I never touch the vanilla version, believing multitrackers to be preferable, but I'll sometimes throw a HW one on, if Im going to have a team leader anyhow. I only bother if he's running different stuff than the rest of the unit, though, as I normally prefer one very dead target unit to small amounts of gunfire hitting many seperate units.

Not even that, all you need is a team leader, 5pts. Their's really no reason to upgrade to a Shas'vre.

Im going to have to agree with Tyndmyr
I believe your much better of killing a unit completely with concentrated fire, then spliting your fire between different targets.
And i also believe that your better of equiping all your suits in a squad the same, so there good at one thing, rather then a Jack of all trades.

I would also not run a target lock within an XV8 unit. Each unit should be made to combat a specific threat, either anti-tank or anti-infantry. The only XV8 I could ever see with a target lock would be one equipped with the AFP, so that the suit could hit an unseen enemy.

I have started using a target lock on my broadsides though and I like it there. It makes the unit a little more expensive, but allows you to take out two vehicles at once. My hammerhead always missed, but the twinlinked railguns on the XV88s are great. I would take the chance of firing on two targets with them.

I do put a HW TL on the team lead(so I don't have to give up my precious TA) when I run a full broadside team. After all, two TL BS4 railguns are probably going to pop whatever they're shooting at anyhow, I may as well fire the team lead at something else.
