Default Shield Drones - Never take another gun drone again

okay, so I'm sure many of the Tau players already know this, but shield drones are one of the most useful units available to the tau. If you keep the with you suits, you will never want to take another gun drone again. Not only do they have a 4+ invulnerable save, but they have the "close proximity" special rule, granting them the same toughness and save as the individual they accompany. a nice addition to a crisis squad.

Now I have a question to pose about them. I got into a debate with one of my friends who plays eldar. His fire prisim to a potshot at my XV88 Broadside team sitting back about 8" from the board edge. the shield drones for this squad were less than an inch behind the suits, and when he measured, the very end of the railgun's barrel was the only thing within the 60" range. Now, he argued that I could not take the damage to my shield drones becuase they were outside of the range of his fire prism. I believed that they could take the damage anyway, that being their design to move up and intercept incoming fire. Who is right

Your both wrong! He measures from the main hull of his vehicle to your BASE, not the most extended point of the model!

So no death!

However, for all intents and purposes, drones count as squad-mates. So, according to the shooting rules, the only members of a squad who can take hits are the ones in range. Thus, broadside takes the hit.

For future games, if your broadside is so close to the bored edge, put the drone directly infront of him (so its even with the left and right sides).

okay, but I always thought that you measured the range from the end of the weapon on the tank, not the tank's hull.

Nope. Its always base-to-base. Or else you could model it in a way that would give you advantages...

For tanks, you measure from the barrel of the weapon to the target (this is problematic, due to conversions). If the target is an infantry model, you must measure to its base; if the target is a tank, measure to its hull (since most have no bases, and in the case of Tau tanks, the base is smaller than the tank itself!). Infantry firing is always measured from the edge of the model's base to the target.

You can only remove casualties from models within range and LOS of the weapon. If your shield drones were not in range of the shot or LOS then they cannot be used as casualties. This is covered in the removing casualties section of the rule book. Very straight forward

This also means you can sniper commanders by placing your models in a manner that the only target they can see and have range to is the model you want to hit. Want to kill that lascannon marine, make sure he is the only target you can see or have range to and he is gone. Also this does not apply to Indirect weapons

Beardy but perfectly legal

That's what I thought. The Railgun has a very long range.
