Default Guide to XV-8 Weapon Selection

The goal of this guide is to get folks properly aquainted with the proper roles and usages of each weapon system and able to pick out appropriate combos for varying roles. There are plenty of popular combos out there, but for simplicity, I'll be using only the weapon names, not the catchy titles. =P

The pilots. They come in a few basic flavors...the Shas'O, the Shas'el, the Shas'vre and the Shas'ui. The important thing to remember is that the 'ui doesn't have access to anything special issue, hardwired, or on the wargear list. However, he's cheap, a virtue in itself. For the purposes of easy comparison, we'll be using him as our example, but you can of course use these same combos to equal or greater effect(thanks to the wonders of hardwiring) on the better suit jockeys.

Weapon System Stats:
Everything given in terms of MEQs(marine equivelent), TEQs(terminator equiv), and GEQs(guard equiv). Also, some vehicle guidelines. For template weapons, its given in terms of the likelihood of damaging eah model underneath it. Clearly, the more, the better.

AFP:Our only guess weapon, the AFP is special issue, short ranged, and very flamerish. The bright side is that it doesn't use BS. Thus, it's most often mounted on a Shas'vre. Weapon is found in the XV-8 commander box.

MEQs: .17
TEQs: .08
GEQs: .67
Vehicles: Just use something else.

Burst Cannon: Pretty much the equivelent of a few pulse rounds, its a pretty generic weapon. Moderately useful against pretty much anything, but only really good against orks/guardsmen.

MEQs: .33
TEQs: .17
GEQs: 1.25
Vehicles -
AV 10: .25 glances, .25 pens
AV 11: .25 glances

Cyclic Ion Blaster: With it's quasi-rending, the CIB is useful against a wide variety of targets. Assault 5 is always popular. =P However, thanks to it's low strength, effectiveness varies wildly.

MEQs: .56
TEQs: .49
GEQs: 1.25
Vehicles: Completely worthless.

Flamer: Like all flamers, negates cover saves, stupidly short range. Very situational.

MEQs: .17
TEQs: .08
GEQs: .67
Vehicles: Just use something else.

Fusion Blaster: While hampered by short range, there is literally nothing that the fusion blaster can't kill. It's high strength also makes it a good choice for racking up instakills or pulverizing vehicles.

MEQs: .42
TEQs: .42
GEQs: .42
Vehicles:
AV10: 36/72 chance of pen.
AV11: 35/72 chance of pen.
AV12: 33/72 chance of pen.
AV13: 30/72 chance of pen.
AV14: 26/72 chance of pen.

Missile Pod: Multi shot, decent range, solid str. A good all-around choice.

MEQs: .28
TEQs: .14
GEQs: .83
Vehicles:
AV10: 1/6 glance, 1/2 penetrate.
AV11: 1/6 glance, 1/3 penetrate.
AV12: 1/6 glance, 1/6 penetrate.
AV13: 1/6 glance

Plasma Rifle: A marine killer with rapid fire. If within RF range, double the numbers below and smile. =)

MEQs: .42
TEQs: .42
GEQs: .42
Vehicles:
AV10: 1/12 glance, 2/12 penetrate.
AV11: 1/12 glance, 1/12 penetrate.
AV12: 1/12 glance.

SMS: Forgeworld. Without getting into specifics, just imagine your hammerheads SMS mounted on the back of a crisis suit. It does pretty much what you'd think it does. Not terribly common given that you can already JSJ with any crisis suits, but I like the looks of the model, personally. Also, it allows you to crank out high amounts of shots from one suit, depending on what you couple it with.

MEQs: .44
TEQs: .22
GEQs: 1.67
Vehicles -
AV 10: .33 glances, .33 pens
AV 11: .33 glances

Now, lets look at combinations. What precisely do you want your suit to do effectively? A vehicle cracker? Well, lets take the top two anti-vehicle weapons, the Fusion Blaster and the Missile pod. Add the two numbers together to get the suits total average results. Keep in mind that these are average, and any given round of firing might vary by quite a bit.

XV-8 with MT, FB and MP:
MEQs: .70
TEQs: .56
GEQs: 1.25
Vehicles:
AV10: 6/72 glance, 72/72 penetrate.
AV11: 6/72 glance, 59/72 penetrate.
AV12: 6/72 glance, 45/72 penetrate.
AV13: 6/72 glance, 30/72 penetrate.
AV14: 26/72 penetrate.

As you can see, even with a mere BS 3, this suit is pretty effective at popping vehicles, especially light-medium ones. For a different BS, simply divide the numbers by 3, then multiply by the desired BS. Go ahead and chart out your favorite configs to find out what they kill best.

Sorry but it seems that in most of the weapons stats the TEQs don't die as easily I'm just wondering if this is an accident or was done on purpose?

Thanks

Clive_BLOODANGELS: That's because TEQ's are Terminator EQuivalents. Not Tau Equivalents or some such.

The OP states he (presumably he) is using TEQ as Tau EQuivalanet.

Isn't it technically impossible for the melta to glance AV10? AP1? or did you include the chance that they might be a skimmer over 12" or deployed smoke launchers?

Well, in every other list that i've ever read ever, TEQ meant TERMINATER EQUIVALENT. Maybe Tau EQ was purposely done, maybe it was a typo. Either way, great guide Tyndmyr. I've been debating what to equip my tank hunting Shas'el and his bodyguard with, and think this has helped to clear it up. What do you guys think, should I go with TLFB's, and Targetting Arrays (Sunforge), FB's, PR's, HWMT and Targetting Arrays (Helios), or FB's, MP's, HWMT's, and targetting arrays? It's a tough call.

Good call on both the AP1 and the tau equiv. Overlooked both of those. Stats are, of course, for terminator equivelents, and I went ahead and fixed those, thanks.

Glad ya'll are enjoying em.

Im hoping to add stats for twin linked systems(where applicable) soon.
