hi adman.

I just cam back to 40K after a long break and had my first battle in 3 years last week, and tau used well are great fun and tricky to break down.

I already had some bits and bobs but here is what i would do if youw ant to buy an army in one go. and i can sort you out a e-mail adress to get 20-25% off GW stuff. heres the link

http://www.gamingfigures.com/pages.asp?p=welcome

1 x Tau Megaforce 100 (75 site price)
1 x Box Kroot 16 (12)
1 x Shaper 6 (4.50)
1 x Box Fire Warriors 16 (12)
1 x Suited Commander 12 (9) (i think)

Seems like a lot but depending on how you arm them out you have about 1700 - 2000 pts there.

The megaforce i would always recommend as a start though, individually the parts are bout 150 in that alone. You get a couple of nice tanks a heavy and troop carrier, 3 fast attack flyers, 20 warriors, loads of drones, 2 suits i use these ones for body guards.

Hope this helps m8

Honestly, just start with the megaforce. It's a big task to assemble and paint that, and it's relatively balanced, wih the stuff you really need in it. And, as you play, you'll get a good idea for where you want to go with your army.

Never buy gun drone squadrons. Gun drones come packed with commanders, fw teams, all the skimmers, stealth suits, XV-8s and Broadsides IIRC. You'll get plenty to run them as a unit without even trying to.

Assuming you want to buy it piece by piece (the mega and battle-forces are better buys if one can afford it)...

First, get the compulsory; a commander box and two fire warrior boxes. Gives you a command suit with all of the options, and two full 12 man fire-warrior squads (can be split into 4 6 man squads), complete with the options for gun and marker drones. Incedentally, to save $5, you can buy a regular crisis suit, though it will not come with fancy stuff like AFB, CIB, and the commander-only support systems, as well as niether commander head. Now, play a few games with this army, and see how it feels (granted, they will be small). What did you like? Did you set up your tau in lines and wreck havic as your enemy approached? Did you jump around with your commander, causing your opponent irratation and destroying his flanks? Or were you constantly moving, using some squads to cover others?

From there, do a little research, and go with your prefferances. If you like the 'static fireline' approach, buy more firewarriors and some broadsides, and maybe kroot. If you loved your commander, you probably want more crisis suits, or maybe some stealth squads. And if you loved always being on the move, maybe mech tau with mounted squads, pirhannas, and hammerhead tanks is for you! Experiment!

And remember, it is more important for you to like using your army than for it to be powerful. If you love your army, you will always have fun, even if you lose by 2,000 points.

Hey adman,

If you want to convert a devilfish into a hammerhead, i suggest the skyray set. It comes with all the heavy weapons and i think devilfish sprues as well. Other then that... I think it's something like modular tanks? search it or just go to tau on the homepage (I.E not forums)

Peace,
Sarnas

I actually found it on the GW site, it costs 7 for the sprue so i am going to get the Battleforce set leave the devilfish. Then put a mail order in for the hammerhead rail gun and viola one hammerhead
