Default Is Aun'shi good?

I am fairly new to the tau, and what first stood out to me was Aun'shi and his outstanding abilities. However, it appears as though he is bashed quite a bit on this site. Is he any good? If so, in what situation(s)?

Aun'shi is a specialised unit. He is useful for defeating lone models with 4 or less attacks. He also will live longer than an average Ethereal, keeping the "price of faliure" rule a less concern. Always join him with 11 FWs and a devilfish. If you want to be causious, keep him on the defensive and he will live even longer. Just make sure it's a high priced game.

He is great in hand-to-hand combat.* However, hand-to-hand combat is the absolute last situation you ever want your ethereal in.* Every time I have ever used an ethereal, he has spent the whole game out of site behind a building (or under a bush) radioing in constructive criticism for The Greater Good.* Aun'shi might be good in some bizarre Tau army designed for the express purpose of surprising an opponent who doesn't expect you to charge.* However, Farsight ends up being better at even this.* All-in-all, he is a great model and a colorful character, but his abilities don't match the optimal role of an ethereal and he tends to be an expensive liability.

Khanaris wonders why GW gave us two close-combat specialists as our special characters?

RJay thinks GW ran out of ideas, so stuck in a modified Ethereal.

Anyway, Aun'Shi isn't really a very good special character as Khanaris pointed out as it is inevitable that you wouldnt want him involved in the match as he will be more of a hinderence than anything else. If you do stick him up front with FW's then you are going to pay the price if he gets killed, which can happen, especially against CC armies (which is were he is supposed to be useful). And if you leave him at the back of the field then why have him at all, thats just wasting 50+ points where a normal Ethereal will have exactly thee same effect on the game.

perhaps they thought that since the whole TAU army is made for shooting then there would be a few leaders that has concentrated on CC. Even thought it seems a little bit odd, Imagine if they would do the same with Ork and Nidz.

But what use is one model capable of Close Combat in a non CC army. The likelyhood of ever using him in CC is near enough never as you dont want to bring you non CC army close enough to be attacked in CC. So realistically your going to want him by himself as not to kill off your squad of FW's. So a single CC model is of very little use. Whereas the other CC specialist (Farsight) actually affects the entire army so is of more use, unlike Aun'Shi.

Admittedly I have haven't been playing long, but I found Aun'shi a godsend. I had a pack of space wolves lead by a wolf priest deep strike behind my line. I surprised him with a Shas'aun'shi assault, and he, 12 firewarriors and 2 gun drones held tough for four rounds of combat, long enough for me to destroy every other unit on the table. Don't forget, if you upgrade to a shas'ui, you're getting 27 S3 attacks and 4 S5 attacks 41/5 on the assault--even marines fail saves some times.

I won another game, when he and his three surviving fire warriors took an objective on the last turn, ignored by the enemies.

Essentially, he makes worse-than-average fire warriors into average assault troops. So long as you don't over estimate that benefit, he can make a great addition to your army.

Laxmasta:

Aun'Shi is indeed a great character. Many people simply don't like characters due to their abilities, rules, or just the fact that he's an Ethereal. Heed not those words. If you like Aun'shi as a character (his fluff, what he is) and his rules - then use him! He's better than a normal Ethereal and twice the price, but he's a really neat character and it's my opinion that he's the coolest special character out there (especially for Tau).

A previous remark on Aun'Shi's behalf:

http://forums.tauonline.org/index.ph...9557#msg139557

And a little remark on Ethereals in general, which Aun'Shi is:

http://forums.tauonline.org/index.ph...8346#msg138346

Cheers!
