Default How to get a skyray when when you have a filled FOC

if you are the sort of person who always stick within the guidelines of the force orginisation chart, but you want more than the heavy support slot allows, then this is a good tactic for you.

fill your HS slots with rail, rail and more rail, then if you still want a skyray, take a unit of 3 or more piranahs and give them 2 seeker missles each.

this equals the amount of seekers that a skyray has. the only flaw is that they cant fire them themselves, but then again neither can the skyray. just take more pathfinders.

You are forgetting that they cost more than a Skyray, and don't have Markerlights. Also, the Skyray can fire its own Seekers.

What do you mean by extra cost? If you take the Piranhas you have less points to work with, and can't affford another rail. You do mean a rail rifle equipped Pathfinder? In my view Pathfinders should be used for Markerlights and that is it, no rail rifles. I also don't really like Pathfinders and I use SMT, Stealth Markerlight Team, for my Markerlight hits.

Well, why not just slap a pair of seekers on each of the Railheads, and get double duty out of them?

But a pack of seeker missiles isnt really the sole appeal of the Skyray... Its the armored, mobile markerlights that make it so desireable.... sure it comes with its own missile array, which is nice, but the BS4 markerlights are more usefull and important in the overall scheme of things.

Actually, for those of you not adverse to using Forgeworld models, just add a pair of Tetras and put seekers on your existing skimmers. I don't have the books here in front of me, but I think I remember a pair of Tetras and 4-6 seeker missiles cost about the same in points as a well-equipped Skyray (with SMS, DL, TA, etc).

You still have your 2 mobile markerlights and 6ish seekers, but with greater flexibility and angle options (Mark from the front and pull a seeker from a vehicle facing side armour, etc). A Tetra/Pirhanna set-up makes for a surprisingly fast and powerful combo coming from the FA slots.

Another option is to take Piranha, Tetras, AND a Skyray. With the Piranha, you still have your tank-busting, so losing a Heavy Attack slot to the Skyray isn't such a great loss. With both Tetras AND a Skyray you have 4 very accurate and mobile markerlights, so you don't need Pathfinders to effectively mark targets.

A possible Force Org on Heavies and Fast A's might look like this:

Fast A:

2 squads of 2 Piranha (total of 4 - Fusions) ~ 300 pts
1 squad of 2 Tetras ~ 110 pts

Heavy:

2x Ion-Heads (w/ BC) ~ 260 pts
1x Skyray (w/SMS) ~ 140 pts

(someone check my points values. I don't have my books with me)

For ~850 points, you have a LOT of very accurate, very fast, very potent Dakka.

4x BS4 8/1
6x BS5 8/3
6x BS4 7/3
2x BS4 5/5 (TL)
8x BS2 5/5 (TL)
12x BS4 5/5
4x BS4 5/5 (No LOS)
4x BS4 Markerlights

3x Heavy Skimmers (12" move & fire)
6x Light Skimmers (12" move & fire, 24" move)
8x Drones (JSJ)

42 total shots - ALL of which are better than BS3
4x BS4 markerlights that can move 12" and mark EVERY turn
16 shots AP 3 or better (6x conditional)
17 total models

The primary weapon of the Skyray is the Markerlights. The missiles are a secondary weapon. Seekers are easy to get into a list. You don't even have to use the Hammerheads. They work very well on Piranhas and Devilfish, as well.

skyrays are IMO cool... you get such a nice allround package

ofc - if your army is too small far a skyray, then a couple piranhas or warfish with missiles are a very nice alternative

I mean, a 1000 point army will most likely have at least one piranha, plus a good number of markerlights from your FW squads

But for the cost of the Third Railhead, you can get a Skyray and 4 seekers on the other two railheads. That gives you 10 Seekers, plus the armoured Markerlights, and it's the same cost as 3 Rails (approx) but you could in theory take out an entire tac squad in one turn with them (if you had enough MLs)

Well, that old skyray-blues.

My personal opinion: Skyrays are not worth it. An ionhead does the same but better, damagewise. Mobile markerlights are the only good thing. But again: Do I really want 2 ML for one of my precious heavy support- choices? They have to compete with two very valuable types of hammerheads, the broadsides and the sniperdrones.

That tank is just for flavor, not for performance.

Same goes for seekers. I did not miss them in any game. I play tau since 4th edi came out (that day I got me the first firewarriors and the dex). In the beginning I took them occasionally, but I soon came to understand that they are simply not worth it. What do they do? Tankbusting? Tau are already the bestsuited army against tanks. MEqs-killing? We got plasma, ioncannon, railguns and and and...
Some people take them to make up for the lack of heavy weaponry in FW-squads. I do not hink that is the best solution. The lack of heavy weaponry indicates a different way of fighting compared to eldar guardians and guardsmen. Tau SPECIALIZE their troops. This is their strength. It allowes us to spend each point in a 100% effective unit (imagine the SMs heavy weapons units: each bolter is most likely wasted).

Seekers will come in handy when an army lacks railguns and fusionblasters, but that should not be the case.

As always: Just my oppinion, feel free do differ^^
