Default Floaty bases on Skimmers

Allright, so I really like the idea of having my devilfishes and other skimmers slightly floating. I know that the boxes come with little stands, but I have never seen them been used in games. Is it alright if I make my own base so the devilfish floats like an inch in the air rules wise? (the bases they come with suck and are really weak). Thanks in advance.

Perfectly fine rules-wise; rubble, a stop sign, whatever you want to use.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

Heya,

The base size doesn't matter on the skimmer. The rules and the latest FAQ help clear up that thing. The hull is what matters. So if you want to make a better base/stand to hold your Skimmer and inch off the board, then great--go for it. Nothing prevents you from making them any height at all on the base. Just remember that the only thing that matters basically here for LOS is size categories and terrain size categories. Sizes 1 through 3. So extreme modeling won't get you extreme options. Just extreme looking.

That said, most people I've come across who don't use the standard base, have used a ball and socket joint on a stand. That way the socket plugs onto the ball end of a stand, and allows you to move the skimmer around on it's stand, but it holds very well (typically made of a silicon or really good rubber). That way you can also take it off the stand for storage. This allows easy use/storage/transporting and no parts that stick into other parts that will break. Look for these kinds of things in hardware stores. Ball and socket joints.

Cheers,

I actually find that unless used on a small skimmer (land speeder or piranha) those ball joint stands tend to break either way. I personally use the regular stands on all my vehicles in my mech army and they have worked fine.

I think MalVeaux is talking about a rubber connector like you would find at a hardware store. The ball-and-socket connecter that GW supplies with some models (the plastic one) is not very durable at all.

You can also use the standard bases, but reinforce the connection between the base and skimmer. I had a problem with all the pins snapping off on the bases, but I reinforced the skimmer, where the pin goes in, and I it is much more solid, and much more stable now.

Pretty much every skimmer I own has had it's plastic stem replaced by a length of coat hanger wire. I was just sick and tired of constantly replacing flying stands.

To late... I magnetized it and really like they way it looks. Its a ruined building with a devilfish flying overhead. I'll post some picks if I can.
