Default Ethereal & Pathfinders

Hi...

Have anyone tried the following combination....Boosting a far-back deployed squad of Pathfinders (Shas'ui with drones) with a Ethereal (could also have drones)? This would be making them Fearless and giving them Ld 10 for targetting priority and having some drones (gun) for those extra casualties of warfare...

His highness and the remains of his squad could then use the Fish as emergency exit when the trouble starts arriving!

You know, as much as I dislike the ethereal, that would be a pretty dang good use for him. Throw marker drones on the shas'ui and the ethereal, you'd have a 12 markerlight fearless support squad of doomyness. ;D

That could be nice use for etheral. The drones could be overkill they would increase cost of markerlights. The medicore 2-5 hits from ML`s is enough to make 2 FoF teams fire at BS5 or launch bunch of seekers.
Gun drones could be good for cheap wound due to patfinders geting alot of attention from oponets.

nice idea. I have to try this

Question: It states that when the Etheral joins the unit then the unit becomes fearless. Normally this means they pass any moral test. Is checking LD for target priority included or not? if not will the rule about all units within sight being able to re-roll morale test then count?

could be wrong but i would say no and no. you would be able to sue his Ld though... i think.

anyhoo ethereals are really too big a points sink hole to buy just for fearless and the extra 2 markerlights. If your pathfinders are making morale checks anyway due to shooting your doing somthing wrong. target priority is almost never a problem.
and 4 marker drones is extreme over kill. you will never need that many lights on one unit.

Heya,

I would not do this personally. In a very, very casual game, perhaps, just for kicks. But in even a half-serious game, no way. You're adding a huge cost to the Pathfinder's already high cost. And you're adding more to it--you're adding a huge `shoot me' sign to this unit. You will spend a decadent sum of points for very few models, all of which are T3 with virtual no armor save for shooting (and by that, what I'm saying is most weapons with any sort of range will either ignore their armor save, or deal them so many wounds that they'll fail enough to wreck the unit anyways). Even though they're fearless, they're still just as easy to kill. The only thing fearless helps, is keeping you from failing a morale check. Well, Ld8 only fails once out of about five times on a test in general; and you won't be testing that unless you take horrific casualties (in which case, the unit is mopped up anyways). The same is true here. You're mopped up regardless, you simply don't check to see if the few left overs don't just run off. The Ld10 target priority is a nice thing--but your battlesuits can take a command & control node upgrade to allow any unit within 12" to use their Ld for target priority--and it's a cheap upgrade. The Ethereal also means you're taking a 2nd HQ (as you must take a Commander, he's 1+). So you're losing the ability to take another Commander. Lastly, you're introducing the ability to have your Ethereal destroyed. Even in a squad, he is still vulnerable because he's in the majority and eventually the squad will be reduced in number an he will take some damage. Once destroyed, all your battlesuits and other infantry may decide to just leave the battlefield. That's a big price to pay, to have pathfinders that don't run away on their failed morale....

If you're looking to have solid markerlights for a high cost, but safer, then I recommend you look at StealthSuits with MarkerDrones.

Cheers,

OK, I'm very inexperienced, but...

Despite this being weird by definition(etheral is a lord with silk-like robes, pathfinders - covered in dirt special ops.), lets see

1. Pathfinders' main advantage is their scout move. You can position them where u want! Etheral - ehhh... So u surrender ur scout move...

2. Etheral with drones and all other things will cost u in points...

3. If the squad catches an ordance barrage because of being Pain in ass of the enemy, etheral goes with them... The fire warriors won't take that well...

In the end we got no scout move, highest target priority on the table and the squad weights double its own weight in gold...

But again its just IMO, I might be wrong... But it is an interesting way...

P.S. In anyway, besides stickking etheral in FW squads, there should be some other way to use him... May be broad side? Or kroot? can he join kroot? (Don't know ) If he can then his blade dancing things will come in handy... Then again the kroot squad will lose inflitrate, move trough trees and will start waving a banner "ordance encore plz!"... Any ideas?

Walk Tall everyone!!!!!

i personally would not use this configuration, my reasons are mostly the same as red_dog's. Plus i think the main points of this idea was the target priority check and the fast escape. the fast escape isn't really that great because any firewarrior squad with a devilfish and numbering less than 12 models can escort the ethereal to safety, or an honour guard with a devilfish could do that too. and as for the target priority, LD 8 is pretty good and as long as you don't roll that badly most of the tests will be passed.
