Default Skyray or Hammerhead

With only 1 gunship available, would you use a skyray or a hammerhead? And what would you equip it with.

I would go with hammerhead because of the two choices of ammunition; solid shot or the submunition. The solid shot is good for taking out bigger targets: Tanks, walkers, and monstrous creatures . While the submunition is good for taking out infantry. I'm just not a big fan of the skyray.

For starters, never buy a Hammerhead. The Skyray box contains the parts for both.

But a Skyray would always be a third choice for Heavy Support. I would never take it before a Hammerhead, unless I already was fielding two of them. Then it would compete with Broadsides or Sniper Drones for the third slot.

The HH is more versatile, you can go with the uber-beefy Railhead to take out heavy opposition, or go skimpy with the equally deadly Ionhead. I like the skyray, but this little variation in it's role, and takes a bit of pt's to get a decent package. Though if I was further along with my army building (that is to say, if I didn't have over 1K pts worth of unbuilt Tau sitting in my closet) I'd get me some skyray's for field, if only to just try something different.

Sky ray. Despite how vaunted the hammerhead's big blast/rail combo is, one "weapon destroyed" result renders the tank to nothing more than an expensive flying shield. With a Sky Ray with a Targeting array and Burst cannons, you can easily get of 6 BS5 shots and occasionally an extra markerlight for cover reduction or missile-lobbing. The missiles count as weapons systems, making the number of weapons they have to destroy jump from 2-3 all the way up to 7-8.
Suddenly it becomes a deadly light-to-medium infantry and light-med tank hunting.

I'd personally prefer a sky ray, for the reasons Damian Alpha stated, and the fact that a tolled up sky ray (TA, MT, DL) is worth Less than a tooled up Railhead. (okay, so maybe ~10-20 more than an ionhead, but you're getting other bonuses too).

Also, people in my area tend to underestimate the sky ray because it doesn't have a railgun and the seekers are single shot.

skyray in addition to what the others have said. you get networked markerlight drones(the little things on the end of each wing come off). think about that....

i like mine with sms, sensor spines, targeting array, & multi-tracker.

in all actuallity it depends on you style of play. if you want to hit quickly and painfully get two ion heads with multi-tracker, sms, & either decoy launcher or disruption pod. swoop in, kill something, pray for half a turn, and swoop out if you want or kill more...

I would go Skyray, as well, and I'm amazed by the support for the Skyray! I remember when the new 'Dex first came out everyone was anti-Skyray, but I'm glad people are seeing it's a very useful tank.

I would go with the Skyray, and run two units of mounted FWs as well as a unit of Vespid. Run all 4 units up in a wall (the Vespid hiding behind the Skyray. It only gives them limited protection in reality, but people will shoot the tanks before they bother with the Vespid) then do a R.A.I.D. with the FWs jumping out and forming a firing line behind the wall of Armour. I call it "Stirring the Hornet's nest." Just make sure you assign the Skyray's ML hits to the Vespid. Tie it in with some XV's (Stealth or Crisis) and you've got a deadly Mont'Ka attack. Just make sure you have some Sniper Drones or Deathrain or Broadsides downfield to keep the other elements at bay (read: stop flankers)
