Default im starting to luv Ethereals

im really coming around to using them. i bought one 2 weeks ago, and its save me countless times!

lately, ill give 2 specific instances why theyre kewl:

1: every so-called 'Tau Brace' ive had to do ive succeeded, making literally every morale roll i needed to make (pass or fail.... hmm Tau Tactica addition: Tau is the race that uses morale failures for its benefit).. think about it: your trying to roll one side or the other of a 7 on 2 dice. 7! thats right smack in the middle of the dice statistics.

2: my Ethereal allowed me to KILL an enemy Librarian. specifics aside, lets just say i LAUGHED at his killer ' Deep Strike- Fear the Darkness' Tactic* *;D

im still thinking up instances where morale is basically a given "do this, then you HAVE to do that" to every other race, but where the Tau with Ethereal can sit back and say to himself "hmm now, wait a minute!'

I am also a really big ethereal fan. Particularly in the new rules.

The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks with ethereals.

They give you a much higher chance of passing countless LD test throughout the game and you have to take one for each squad if he dies (big if) and the tau have reasonable LD to deal with this anyway.

They are also very cheap which gives you points to spend on other things.

I wonder if rerolling successful tests is really what GW had in mind when writing that rule. Difference between letter and spirit of the rule.

Well firewarriors are inspired by an ethereals presence.

This will also help them to focus harder on their goals thus it makes sense that they could re-roll the tests to shoot at targets which arent the closest for example.

About the successful tests, i'm not sure, it could represent the ethereal having a tactical presence (or knowing what is best for the greater good) and ordering a unit to fall back when if they where in their own they would have decided to stay.

I seem to recall that there is a marine character that explicitly gets the ability to reroll passed or failed tests (besides the Inquistor, who just gets to choose pass or fail).* They said that he sometimes suggested discretion or something to that effect.* *I suppose that while the Ethereal is on the table, the Fire Warriors may think straight for long enough to recover from a sudden attack of heroics and leg it.

I'm a big opponent of etherals in anything lower than 2k as they have stabbed me every time.

and IMO in <2k there cannot be enough protection offered while still maintaining mobility (etheral in a fish makes FoF risky)

and despite what you may think its very easy to kill the etheral if its not adequately protected.

add to that it doesnt kill anything and (despite it being a questionable requirement to earn back points) and removes the exellent bargain that is the shas'El from the running (2 HQ's is wasted points IMO)

not the best unit IMO.

You could use Aun'shi. While not teribbly great, he at least has the hard wired shild gen, rending, and gives bonuses to the squad he's leading, at a decent price. And not all of us use Shas'el's/ Shas'O's.
I personally have always taken an etherial, but I thinking of droping him for fluff reasons, i dont think the TAU would send an etherial into every battle after all.

thats right smack in the middle of the dice statistics.
Your chances of getting a 7 or less is ~58%. So, the Ethereal definitely will come in handy.

As for the "spirit" of GW's intention: I think that's clear in the rule. IIRC it explicitly states "passed or failed" Ld checks. I think the whole purpose was to allow for tau to disengage from assaults. Of course with the sweeping advance changes in the 4th edition that can be deadly unless you're using the Brace or are extrememly lucky.

a running unit of tau that has the opponent SAdvance almost always looses, yes.

and Aun'Shi is garbadge, more expensive than a normal (bad IMO already in low games) Eltheral and with the ability to get a squad of Fw killed, lovely......
