Default Shield Drones

i was haning out at the local gaming store observing the ongoing 40k games and an aquantance of mine (who was giving me advice on tau) told me to get shield drones. i say that in the new rules, arnt they kind of obsolete under the new rules. he says that the old rule still remains in effect. i asked him where he had heard this and he responded "the GW people"

has anyone run into the same occurance or is this an isolated event?

A sheild drone confes a 4+ invulnerable , ergo, they are NOT obsolete (unles there's a handy C'tan phase knife or something). Drones are not obsolete anway, just got a few more problems now.

Sheild Drones are obsolete in many occassions. The old rules are gone and the GW people are probably red shirts who don't know what they're talking about. The update for Tau is on the GW website under 4th edition FAQ's version 4.1 or something like that.
They still give a 4+ invulnerable but are only hit if they are in the majority. So a 12 man firewarrior squad with 2 shield drones is useless since the drones won't get hit until there is only 2 warriors left. They are useful for guarding lone broadsides and useful for crisis suits if everyone has a controller so that they outnumber the suits for a while but otherwise have become not even close to worth their points anymore.

They are still as hard to kill as they used to be, but there are very few situations left where they can be used to protect anything. Added to fact that they are unarmed, they are too expensive for what they have become.

I'm no authority, but I analyzed Drone use under v4 pretty carefully because I used them a lot with the original list. Check out reply #17 to this thread and I break down the pros and cons (some of them anyway) to both Gun Drones and Shield Drones.

Some of that breakdown is a little debateable what with the idea of the "Tau Brace" that's being discussed in several of the Close Combat or Drone threads.

All Drones have diminished effectiveness agaisnt shooting now, but a 4+INV save is still a 4+INV save.

They are most useful with a single battlesuit, but even then it can be tough for both to take a hit. If all the shooting comes on one turn, both drones will be hit first. The trouble is that the 4+ invulnerable comes at the cost of all hits that end up allocated against the battlesuit being resolved at the drone's toughness.

But doesn't the codex say that if you include drones in a squad, they must have hits allocated to them first? I read the updates FAQ for the codex and this hasn't changed, so doesn't the codex override the rulebook?

Yes, but the current FAQ from Games Workshop negates that. It says that Drones follow majority saves and toughness instead of what it says in the codex.

man, if that's the case, I'd be pretty hard pressed in my current tactics. Time for a change !

I hope that the GW people add something to our advantage (like more heavy weapon options to FW squads) or something coz I gots a funny feeling that I'll be getting trumped on my next game

actualy, this is what my post was generaly about, some of the readshirts (ie GW rulebook heads) say that the drone takes the hits first, then the rest.

sorry if i confused anyone in my round about way.
