Default Too Cheesy to begin with?

:

so, last weekend i was chatting WH40K at my local gamestore, and one of the vets advised me this:

"take BOTH HQ slots. HQ units are truly elite and more effective units than anything, and if you take 1 and i take 2, your screwed"

so last game i had 2 Fire Knife +'s (Fireknife+ = PLasma, missile pod, fusion gun, HW multi).. each one a Shas'el.

thing is, they were loners.. and therefore Independant Characters. these 2 very heavilly armed HQs with BS4 flitted around the whole battle, abusing the heck outta the rule that independant characters cannot be targetted unless they are the nearest unit.

so, my question is: should i be fed to Orks for doing this? is this the cheesiest thing in the world? i HATE feeling loopholey!

That is what I call rule whoreing, it with in the rules of the game but not in good spirit.

But all these little trick have counters.

This one is simple, you will hide directly behind some troops and unload and the enemy, to counter this assault your troop wall and since they will be locked in close combat they dont count as a target for ranged weapons, makeing your HQ the closest.

Or I can move up with some fast attack and smoke him like a fine cuban cigar, with bikes, assault guys or use my own suits to gain distance.

Whoever this "veteran" was obviously doesn't know what he's talking about

yeah, instead of using an hq as an elite, you can use an actual elite.

I'd say no, but it is annoying.

Thing is, as your opponent, I'd try to ignore those two nutters as much as possible and try to break your units so they didn't have anyone to hide behind. I pretty much know that if I assauly you it doesn't matter how "flitty" you are, so I'd send off a bait squad or two and attempt to engage you in close combat as soon as possible.

hmm about this tactic.. for one thing it would annoy the hell outta your opponent.. its also relatively cheesy (only compared to 9 broadsides etc) and powergaming.. and your pretty much spending a large majority of your points on your HQs.. But basically it depends on how many point games your playing.. I'd say at around.. 1000 and under.. its fairly cheesy and people will hate you for it.. above that and games closer to 1500, it should be fine..

oh yeah, and to answer your last question, not it isnt the cheesiest thing in the world :P (at least not compared to the before mentioned 9 broadsides or the opinion that 'any army that doesn't fill up its heavy slots are crap&#39
