Default sniper drone markerlight rules and/or sportmanship issue

hey all, got a rules/sportsmanship question... When using a sniper drone unit I always role all my dice at the same time (ie 3 drone shots and 1 markerlight(ML) shot) what I am wondering about is if I need to declare BEFOREHAND whether the ML shot is going to be for this squad or for another. currently i have just been using it automatically for that squad, but the other day had a game where the drones (and spotter) just kept hitting on the own BS and I felt like I was wasting my ML hits. Appreciate any thoughts you all might have on this issue.
Cheers,
Eric

The rules for the networked markerlight state that it is rolled for before the rest of shooting for the squad (if I recall) I always toss the markerlight die first, then declare if I'm using it for the drone squad or not, and then declare what for (usually +1WS), then toss the other dice.

If you were to roll the markerlight and the shots at the same time and not declare what you;re using the ML for until after the dice hit the table then it would be easy for someone unscrupulous to roll all at once, see that all the rifles hit at BS3 and then either declare he;s saving the ML, or using it to reduce Ld for pinning.

Roll, declare, roll

That's how I've always played it.

Roll, declare, roll.

Most of the time it's +1 BS.

thanks,
That was pretty much what i was thinking too! (that even though i have been using the ML for that squad, I should declare it before hand)
Cheers,

I woud look to see the following:

1.) Rule book - Rolling to hit: Does the book indicate all of the rolling to hit occurs simultaneously?

2.) Markerlight/networked markerlight - Does the Markerlight/ networked markerlight rule force mklight rolls to come first?

3.) Boosting to hit - does the rule governing the use of a mklight hit to boost to hit rolls require that the use be declared before rolling?

Books are not with me.. i cannot answer these questions.

Normally all shots for a squad are done at the same time (which is why normal markerlights do not allow the squad using them to benefit.

Networked markerlights are resolved before the rest of squad shooting.

And yes, you have to declare that you are using a markerlight token and on what. You can;t just roll and say "Oh, well I used a markerlight so all those hit..."

I roll a different colored die for the ML to hit.

My way goes as follows:
1. Declare a target
2. Declare what markerlight is doing
3. Target Prority
4. Declare what the number is you need for
5. Roll the dice
a. Seperatly
b. Together but different colored dice for different BS

Marklights work oddly as if their successful you then get the choice as to how to use them in comparison to other units. With the Network marklight, roll it first, if successful place a token to the unit marked. Then you decide how you want to spend that token. It's a complealy different action from the squad shooting. So yea, do the networked marklight first, and then roll the shooting for the rest of the squad.

This may have some impact on the current question; I think the drones have target lock in their profile (at work can't access the codex) so this needs to be taken into account when shooting the drones.
