they have the target aray, so they are BS3- the markerlight can be used to make them BS4 but you can also use them to help its pinning ability or worsen cover saves

I generally roll all the MLs in my army in a "markerlight phase" and then follow up with my normal shooting phase. This way, any ML hits I accrue I can then better split the markers across squads. This is going to be easier now that I have actual tokens to designate hits, as I'm going to have numbers on them, so Marker 1 was fired by Squad A, this way accompanying squads (for example, FW squads with 'Uis) won't end up benefitting from thier own markerlight (or at least I can't be accused of it)

So in this case, I would have the Spotter shoot in the Markerlight Phase. Then I use up all my Markers, and can then designate from there.

Tau Empire Codex P 29:

"It is fired before the remainder of the unit fires."

Yeah that is a good idea. If Squad A is always Marker #1 it would be even better. I know someone who copies the markers on contruction paper and uses different colors for each squad.

Yeah, right now I've got 9 Markers and 11 MLs in 6 squads so I can't nessessarily do that, because if I get really lucky, I won't have the right markers for the right squads. When I make more markers, then I might do that, though.

On a semi-related note, if you have two FW teas with Shas'uis armed with markerlights and target locks, each facing a seperate enemy unit, could you resolve the shas'ui markerlights before shooting the squads so that 'Ui A can light up squad B's target and 'Ui B can light up squad A's target before resolving the pulse rifle shots?

Or do I have to have all of squad A fire (with the 'Ui shooting at squad B;s target), and then squad B gets to fire (and benefit from the ML hot) and Ui B's markerlight is effectively wasted?

one unit at a time... so B's mklight won't be usable for A squad's shooting

However, I believe that fallback rolls are resolved after ALL shooting is complete. In that case, could you use remaining ML hits to lower the leadership of that respective unit? Here it would not be a wasted ML hit.

No, LD reduction is ONLY for pinning tests. I thought the same at one point, but you re-read, and there is that stipulation.
