Default New to Warhammer 40k...help anyone?

Hey, I am

finally going to start playing Warhammer after years of just dreaming about it. Anyways I

have been reading alot of info online and the only problem I have been having is most of

information seems to generalized. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help walk me

through what items I should purchase, Such as tools I should have, setting up my 1st army

and how much paint I need to buy. Also things such as websites/books I should read. If

anyone would be able to help me with that and also answer questions with more of a in-

depth response that would be great. I would prefer to communicate through IM or email if

possible as I am sure questions I will ask will not be forum specific.

Many

Thanks,
BileFroth

Oh and heh I forgot to mention I am obvisously looking

to make a Tau army and get some more info about them.

Ok for your first army Assuming youhave friends that play. Get a stanly

knife, wire clipers super glue and a basic paint set (they still sell those dont they?).

Ten you have all the basic modeling equipment. Next you need a codex, and a

40K rule book (might want to wait abit before you buy this, it is about to be rereleased

). Then you start with the good stuff colecting painting and converting your own

army. All through the above prosses you should play asmany battles as possible to

find what playing style suits you best, so that way you don't buy models that you

will never use. Once you have a basic army (two troops and an HQ) sit down with an

experianced (unless you are one yourself) and lern as much as possible. Now that

you are capable of puting together and painting your own models, buy more.

Happy days.

Now, I've seen a fair few Tau newbies, so I'll try to give you the

benefit of their mistakes.

1) DON'T take three weapons per Crisis Suit. 2

and a Multi Tracker is a better choice, as you can fire two weapons a turn.

2)

Don't expect to win in assault. Ever. Even with Kroot.

That said, a

single Firewarrior did hold up an entire Guard squad in assault... must be related to

Kais.

3) Only half of the Tau in a squad can have Pulse Carbines. I've

seen people give the entire squad Carbines before now...

Correction -
do

take three weapons pe crisis but just on Shas'vres ore more so you can have a hard-

wired multitracker. It will add more points to your army but only around another 10 per

crisis shas'vre. That way if, like myself, you have loads of mates with different

armies you can fight effectively against all.

OR you could not glue weapons

onto crisis at all and just clip them in - they fit well once painted, that way you can

change for each army.

Unfortunately I currently

have no friends that play any table top game. I spent years trying to get them to go into

it with me but I finally gave up and decided to go it alone. So I am going to have to

start looking at my local hobby shop for some people.

Now this is something that has been confusing me

...To give a squad different weapons do I have to glue that weapon onto the model? If I

have to glue it on does it come with the squad I buy or do I have to buy a separate set

of weapons? Also if that is the case and I decide down the road to change weapons do I

just snip and glue on a different weapon and paint or do I have to buy a new unit?<br /

Now I saw RJay post about clipping in on crisis and I will give that a try. The

questions above are directed more towards units where that tactic doesn't work like

Firewarriors.

some firewarrios?...Please correct me if I am wrong

First. you do have to

glue the different gun onto a unit instead of the usual

Second. you get a loud

of spare bits with plastic sets - and yes the fire warrior (troops) set does come

with pulse carbines, grenades and a whole host of other stuff

Third. you

probably could change weapons, you would just have to cut off the pulse rifle arms and

replace them with pulse carbine arms (the gun comes attached to a set of arms)

Fourth. Even though im RJay not GOD i'll answer the question anyway. 2 sets

of Fire Warriors (NOT KROOT)
Crisis suits are Elite or HQ so go with one crisis

commander to start. When you get the money (if you haven't got it) you can give the

commander a bodyguard or two (Crisis)

I hope this helps!

Great thanks RJay.

Ok I am starting to build my wish list of items that I am going to buy in a couple of

days once I am sure. About purchasing I have been looking at this store I found http://

www.scifigenre.com/ ( Direct link to Tau stuff http://www.scifigenre.com/browse.aspx?sid

=JXXQKXIYNIUHTQN&nSubCategoryID=135&nExpandToID=11 12#A1 ) that or Ebay as I am a

College Student heh I don't have to...much to spend. The stuff of that site was even

lower priced then most I found on ebay and I am more confortable dealing with a store

website then ebay. If you know of a better place please let me know >

For

my paint scheme I was going to go with this "Ultra Violet Camo" design I found

here http://www.4starmilitarysurplus.com/colors.htm What I am kind of looking to create

is well if you ever played starcraft and you remember the Twilight terrain and that

purple color I want to make an army that would be able to fight on that. Theses are the

colors that I decided to go with: Warlock Purple, Fortress Grey, Chaos Black, Skull

White, Boltgun Metal. I was thinking of then placing sand on the unit's base and

painting it dark purple to go with the Twilight themer.

Now one other thing I

was wondering about is I keep hearing about basecoats...Does that mean painted or sprayed

with primer? or can the base coat just be like say any of the spray/brush paint colors?

Thanks again for your help!

A basecoat is basicly

an undercoat usually this is chaos black ir skull white - white for light coloured

armies, black for dark coloured. In your case i'd use black. This can be either

painted using normal paint (not recommended) or sprayed using a spray you can get from

Games Workshop - it costs a fiver for a big can. The spray gives an even surface best to

paint on..

...so i think you should go with the spray for basecoats

Your chosen colour scheme is quite imaginative, beats mine! Mine are just sandy colours

because i got this battlefield layout at home which is canyons and gulleys using

polystrene based on Arkunasha in the Tau codex!

bit late but oh well.

For alternitive armements I glue both pulse rifles and pulse carbines to half my fire

warriors. I agree with RJay about what units you should get first.

about the undercoat,

you can use a normal paint, but dilute it a bit so it doesn't cover the details. to

dilute, get a thinner retardant if you see you're uncomfortable painting because it

dries too quickly, or just use water, or some dish soap. I find the paint off the pot a

bit thick to paint details.
