Default mech armies

I was playing in a tournament at a store. One of the other players was also playing tau, but he was using almost entirely battle suits. The player didn't do to bad he got like third with the army. The problem i see is that every one is saying mech armies are not that good...
Now i am completely confused ??? :-\

totally depends. if the maps didnt have enough/too much cover, difficulties arise. But if the suits are well equipped and well fielded, they'll kick a**. Personally, I love the idea of a mech army, although mine would have some tanks in it. O0

He may have scored low on painting and composition.

it all depends on the Mech-type, allsuit armies tend to have issues with taking casualties ;D and tend to not score well on composition as Grim said.

However, normal mech (Fish squads and medium battlesuits) tend to do very well and score well on comp. aswell because they contain a large enough amount of troops.

and Dont listen to people who simply say mech=bad, what evidence do they give? is it belivable? and most of all, did the people playing the army actually know how to play mech?(its pretty much totally different to the mind numbing stand and shoot Tau)

I destroy marines on a regular basis with an almost all battlesuit army. It works, you just have to know how to use it.

Correct... it does work, and you do just need to know how to use it... wow im repeating Col Wolfe...

Mech Armies arent that uncommon really and i find one of the main reasons some tau players dont load up on the battlesuits is cos of the small factor of money.... Though tanks dont really fit with a battlesuit army, their more for FW loaded up armies, which are just as successful...

it strikes me as strange that all the sample armies and tornument armies/battle reports involving tau in WD etc. that no player tends to use an out and out mech tau army when tau are featured, also all the lists have very wierd and uneccesery upgrades....and these guys get played to play! lol, just my opinions but look at these four army lists and decide for yourself -

http://us.games-workshop.com/games/4...ists/list1.htm
http://us.games-workshop.com/games/4...ists/list2.htm
http://uk.games-workshop.com/news/uk...cles-tau-3.htm (some awsome models and paintowrk in these last two lists though)
http://uk.games-workshop.com/news/uk...cles-tau-5.htm

now i know GW wont tell players what style to play, thats just stupid but they should try and encourage people not to take cheesy armies, explain what that is etc. IMO mech tau or semi mech as i play is the only way to play best with tau, best not only in terms of results but also enjoyment for both parties involved...static just becomes boring and the battle plans monotonous too...The reason maybe people dont take many tau mech armies IMO is just that GW dont seem to acknowledge it as a way of playing and all their tau amries ive seen have neevr been paticularly mobile at all, i know not everyone copys exactly what gw do but it sure does have a big influence...

just my 2 cents,

This army isn't even legal! Where is the support systems for the broadsides!?

I don't agree that mechanized (although I play it most the time) need to be the best to play all times. I have played and met static Tau and found those armies as good as mechanized in the aspects you mention. But overall, you are right - mechanized are good and I guess we will see lots of mech armies (not just Tau) in the future. Many marine players said that their beloved rhino became worthless in 4th ed. but I disagree - they can do the "Rhino Drive-by" now, not as effective as the FoF but still cool.

hey i hadnt noticed that before abou that list! thanks for pointing it out!

Yeh static tau isnt so bad, i played it to start off with but i prefer a mix of the two to make sure a few lucky shots wont take out my plans and to keep my model count fairly high, while still keeping good mobility of troops.

As for the rhino drive by i havent met that tactic yet?

The most effective must be 10 CSM with two flamers and an AC with Combi-Flamer. That is 14 bolter shots and 3 flamers! The marines can't use their rhino as an obstacle for assaulters but instead have better staying power themselves.
Sorry for the OT.
