Read the Codex. Each Caste is a subspecies. The answer is no and never. That goes for interbreeding too.

Casts exist in the world today in a couple of cultures, India being the most obvious ones(y'kow the little dot a lot of Indias have on their forheads? The colour of it shows what caste you belong to). What it essentially is is an indication of what bloodline you decend from. It's basically a "brand", showing who your parents were. Since you can't change who your parents were, you cannot change what caste you belong to. So, no. Earth, Fire, Air and Water caste aren't just diffrent branches, they're diffrent bloodlines.

It wouldn`t be a caste if you could change it *g*.

Although, to my knowledge, in India it is possible to become a member of a lower caste by marriage ("downgrading") - but Im not sure if I`m right...

The Tau castes are, first of all, equally important (so downgrading is not possible), second, interbreeding is not allowed (at a penalty of death - the only crime for which this sentence is issued, btw), and, most probably, not even possible (since they are different subspecies, and who knows what kind of malformed offspring such a union would produce? Probably the reason for the punishment).

If they can't breed offspring that can reproduce themselves then they aren't a species or subspecies. If the Tau castes are all part of the same species then they have to be ABLE to reproduce.

Where'd you get that from? And what's the rationale behind that?

Just re-read the Codex - sorry, I remembered wrong: Interbreeding has been forbidden by the Ethereals, but the punishment is NOT mentioned... Don`t know where I got the last part from, maybe from the book firewarrior or from the Index Xenos?

The rationale behind it? Simple: Either, cross-breeding creates mutants, and, therefore is dangerous to the offspring.
Or, cross-breeding could make the differences between the castes disappear - which could destabilize the Tau society, weaken the role of the Ethereals and therefore is not desired, as well (probably Wargamers point of view *g*).

The different Castes are essentially Tau sub-species, evolved many years due to the environment and behavioural characteristics they adopted. With the coming of the Ethereals, all these sub-species were united under one cause, but the Ethereals realised that they had different qualities that could be usefull to the fledgeling empire, and so created the Castes. Now although they are different sub-species and have different physical and behavioural characteristics, they would still be able to breed as they are the same overall species. But the likely hood would be that mutations would occur in the resulting offspring, this probably being the reason that the Ethereals forbayed it, as it would infect the gene pools of the castes and dissolve the boundaries, effectively collapsing the Tau's social structure. I don't think the punishment for interbreeding is death though, i don't recall reading it or hearing it anywhere and i think it probably defies all of the Tau's ethics where the Greater Good is concerned. But for a Tau to change their Caste is completely impossible and forbidden. However, the possibility of any Tau wanting to change their Caste is very slim, as they are all born with the governing characteristics of their initial Caste.

But this is simply how i understnad it!

Cheers, spacmarine2000
