Default Smart-Missile Priority Test

Quick question about smart missiles...

In the Codex it says that "Models firing a smart missile system do not need to make a Target Priority test."

If your Broadside is multi-tracking and you want to fire both smart missiles and railguns at a target, does that mean the railgun also benefits from not having to take a priority check?

It makes sense in "real world" terms, since the missile would acquire the target lock and then both weapons would fire off the same system. I just wanted to make sure that's how it was intended in game terms.

A 'free' priority check for a railgun within 24" seems like it might bother some people.

Nope, only the SMS would benefit from the "No Priority Check" ability.

If that's the case, I'm guessing you would lose the railgun shot then if it didn't pass the check?

Obviously you wouldn't be able to change the target of the sms after declaring, and you can't fire at multiples with the battlesuit version of the multi-tracker.

Thanks.

You would still make the test. If you pass, you can fire the Railgun and SMS at whoever you want. If you fail, you can either fire both weapons at the closest target or fire the SMS at a target further away from you. If you are not planning on firing the Railgun (target out of LOS), you don't need to make a priority check.

If there are two units within 24" i'd shoot at the closest anyway.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

Yeah but that might be exactly what they want you to do. "yes, Shoot the assault marines I haven't tooled up. pay no attention to 300 points of landraider. ... please"

In which case you don't need check to begin with. Large target and all.

I know, it was off topic, I promise I won't do it again...

With Tau, the biggest Target Priority problems we have are with Broadsides and Sniper Teams. Fire Warriors are generally going to be firing at the closest target (regular or Large), as are many of the more common Crisis configs. But Broadsides and Sniper Teams end up having to take these tests a lot, which is why saving a few Markerlights for them can be a good idea.

ick! bad example. I wanted to say devastators!

Khanaris is pretty spot on. For just about anything else, I'm either aiming at the closest target, or something big. Want to avoid melee after all, so the pulse goes to whatever's threatening that unless there's a damn good reason not to.

In most cases the same goes for broadsides. My commander has HQ's or MEQ/termie on the brain, my jumpers usually have their own target or aim at whatever to support, and the broadsides are on vehicle/monster duty. The latter might have to take a check if there's a command squad that pops its head in LOS, but most of the time that's CIB fodder anyways.

Snipers though...
