I prefer the full 20-man unit. Kroot are a little vulnerable to panic from shooting. I have never had much use for Kroot Hounds or Krootox. Shapers are likewise a little too expensive. The armor save is nice in close-combat, but Kroot are better off with cover saves most of the time.

I would not suggest the krootox, he takes away infiltration. Other than that, it depends on how much you want to spend.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

I don't think Hounds are good for much except extra attacks and some ablative models... I don't have the 4th edition codex, but didn't they lose their "Release the Hounds" special rule?

They do have I 5, so they strike much faster than carnivores(i could be mistaken, but i think that makes them strike simultaneously with eldar).

Depends on what kind of Eldar. Eldar Guardians strike at I4. Dire Avengers strike at I5, and so do their evil counterparts Dark Eldar Warriors. So Hounds'll strike before Guardians (which seem to be the more common troop for Eldar armies), but simultaneously with Dark Eldar and Dire Avengers.

As for Kroot Hounds as a whole, I find they're actually a pretty good unit. I don't use them too much, because they don't really roll with my image, but they're certainly a fine adaption to an assaulty Kroot squad. They excel at close combat beyond that of a normal Kroot, striking extra fast, and with more attacks, for a point less. In a shooty Kroot squad they of course don't offer much help, as their close combat skill doesn't play into anything, and then they don't have have long ranged weapons. So obviously, take them in close combat squads only. But in general they're pretty good. Don't like the models too much, but nonetheless: Good.

Yeah. They lost that. Well... 99.9% sure on that at least. Don't remember seeing the rule in the codex, but I don't have my codex right now to check.

Kroot Hounds are, in my opinion, an excellent unit. they cost 1 point less than a Carnivore, have the same amount of attacks, and have +2 to initiative. they are awesome....

Release the hounds is gone. Fluffy but useless rule.

My advice is to either minimize or maximize your kroot squad. A small 10-kroot squad is a handy scoring unit for the expensive tau and can be useful in combat with support or be pests with shooting.

If you actually need the squad to be killy them it's best to maximize- pool their attacks/firepower and be able to survive a turn or two.

In either case, cover is your best friend, as kroot actually have fairly impressive statistics except being naked.

Kroot hounds are a cheap way to get a couple extra hits or wounds and I often attach them to the maximized squad.

Krootox are still not so great, but if you use a static kroot line (ie-protecting broadsides) when the loss of the extremely valuable infilrate is justifiable, then definately give them a shot. One of the players in my group fields a couple of krootox and calls them his "power fists."

Make sure you have a stategy with kroot- they play quite differently than other Tau units and it takes a little while to co-ordinate them in army sized maneuvers.
