Default Replacing alien units with specialist Tau

So, I had an idea.

Why not model up some special tau minis to represent kroot and vespids?

Instead of Kroot you could have soething like Tau Rangers. Specialist trained light assault tau used for scouting hostile worlds for possibile colonization. Forced to rely on stealth, guile and their own bodies, these survivalists are equipped to survive on the fringe and guard frontier settlements. Fire Warrior legs (too bad pathfinders are solid metal, their legs would be ideal) perhaps Katachan bodies and arms to set them apart from their papered, weedy brethern. Cut-down pulse rifles (but not carbines), with bayonettes to represent kroot rifles

Kroot Hounds could be represented by some kind of close combat specialist, carryign a pair of fearsome blades, lunging into the fray Or leave them as is (or replace them with wolves or something) and just say they;re tamed hunting beasts

Krootox represent a bigger problem, modeling wise. You could leave them as is and stick a modified tau gunner on it. Or you could make it a heavy weapon team. 'course that wouldn't represent its assaule capabilites so well... The low/no armor save makes doing it as some kind of bulky/industrial power suit a little unconvincing.

For Vespids just call them some sort of crack rapid-response team. Tau torsos, maybe on modified IG arms and legs. Give 'em jetpacks of some sort, maybe swooping hawk wings, some kind of amped up carbine. Maybe make them cybernetically/chemically augented to explain their high initiative

Could be fun, eh?

You could do that..

It's a good idea, I mean, I tried doing that too. It's just that for me, the actual tau kinda strike me as wimps, so I always end up imagining them as Gue'vesa or whatever

Go for it though, it'll be awesome for sure

That's why I figured either rugged fringe-dwellers who *have* to buff up to survive, or some sort of bionic/juiced up commandos.

I just don;t like the look of the alien units. they wreck the theme for me.

Though the idea of making them human reserves has its attraction.
Namely using relatively unmodified Catachans with some fancy guns ;-) Maybe Krootox could be Ogryns hauling Kroot Guns ;-)

Sounds very fun indeed. Sounds like more of that favorite "Counts-as" fiasco that everyone is doing...including myself :funny:

Anyways, the Kroot-Ox does pose a large problem trying to fit it in with the rest of your group...perhaps a Drone carrying the Kroot-Ox gun controlled by one of your specialists? Sound ligit?

yeah, i was semi tempted, but more along the lines of vespides, i havent really given much thought to kroot.

I much prefer the idea of an all tau force ...

What are the rules for using proxies? or "counts as" i mean obviously using a predator for a HH is a bit iffy but if the model is on the same size base and made by GW, what are the rules? What's the difference between a proxy or "counts as" and something that has been very heavily converted? how do they rule on what is sensible and what isn't?

As long as the models have been converted properly, they're fine. You actually get bonus points in most tournements for good conversions. So if you model them with a different gun, and some nice close combat weapons, and possibly less armor, they should be fine.

That doesn't make any sense.

Now a krootox-carrying drone on the other hand....

Hmm well the reason the Auxuleries Exist is because the Tau CANT do what they do. The Tau dont have a nuetron gun equivilent and nuetron guns NEED a Vespid to control the crystal technology. Also your tau-kroot equivlents are still going to be Tau and have Tau S/I and WS. Incidently since the Tau empire is unifyed there are no "fringe" elements.

In other words this will be one of the most Un-fluffy things ever. Of cource that shouldent stop you if you realy want to do it.

Games Workshop actually beat you to the idea.

Look towards the bottom of the page, under "Hunting Further," there's also some pictures of the conversions.

I think this is a good idea if you don't like the style of the alien models. Official fluff is really just there as guidelines. There are limits to how far most people will follow you in terms of "Counts-as" rules, but in this case the motivation is pretty clear and I can't see anyone having a problem with it.
