Default Commander Shadowsun

Hey, i recently bought commander shadowsun at my local GW, however i am new to tau and have not had many battles. I played her in my army the other day but she didn't go down to well, i noticed her toughness is quite low (+3). Is there any suggestions of how i could play her in future to get better results?

Use her purely as a defensive model. Just because she can jsj doesn't mean she should be on the front lines. You should literally only be playing her in a hybrid or static tau army, and then you should be leaving her at the back so that you can use her special drone for all ld tests.

Trying to put her in either a mech tau army or trying to lead an assault with her is just plain suicide.

I'm more a believer that Shadowsun isn't too useful at all. Lets look at this briefly, shall we?

She comes with drones - that cost her her IC status
This is obviously helped by the stealth field anyway, but still, she's not nearly as sturdy as she would be with both. And is anyone really going to get all those drones killed without her too?

1500 points to field

When you consider how (arguably) poor she really is, I don't see how she'd be overpowered in any smaller games. At 1500, she seems like a random points sink, or a way for someone to make a list without any Crisis suits on it.

She has counter-intuitive equipment
This has always been my biggest beef with Shadowsun. Why do they give my special character in a stealthsuit the shortest range gun in the entire Tau armory? Oh joy, she gets 2 ... There was never any good justification for this in anything but a fluffy sense, because nobody can deny that if she's shooting something, something is shooting her.

It's even arguable that her drone takes a piece of equipment that would be better served on an HQ Crisis which would at least be able to shoot while standing there, and it would have it's IC status to help it stay alive too.
I know I'm not making any devestating arguements here, but I don't believe in her myself.

Shadowsun and Aun'va were the worst designed special Characters ever - stupid, contradictory rules/fluff, and some of the worst models I have ever seen GW scultp. We would have been better off sticking with Farsight and Aun'shi.

Funny you say that, i have Aun'shi and Farsight too, so, would i be better off using them instead? And if so, which one would you advise me to use?

If you are just starting out Aun'shi is your best bet.

But he's no longer codex legal.... alas.

I reccommend, you simply take a Shas'El of your own devising. Quite simply, Special Characters, are, IMO, a waste of time, and points. I know that my 99pt Shas'El can take on anyone, be it guard, dreads, landraiders, Marine IC's etc, and he's under a hundred points. Much better than some half assed attempt by GW to make a decent character.

it angers me that GW will make many elaberate characters for the other races...yet they completely half ass the Tau...O'shovah is the only character thats worth using when it comes to special models...I miss Aun'shi...

Point of fact, the set up I always use, which, so far has never let me down:

Shas'El - Mpod, PRifle, FBlaster, HW Multi-Tracker. 99pts, 124 for a Shas'O.

Has missiles for range, and light vehicles/dreads/medium infantry, Plasma to hit MEQ's, fusion to hit Tanks/MeQ's.

Combines the best bits of Deathrain and Helios, all in a lovely untouchable IC.
