Default Anyone Use Gun Drone Squads?

They look like a good choice to me. Cheap, mobile, pinning. But Tau have so many cool fast attack choices as it stands (I think I wanna get some vespids sometime and go marine hunting)

Also, teaming gun drones up with a solo battlesuit commander could be a good deal Same kind of mobility, cheap cover for your suit. Could give you an excuse to use all those short range assault weapons (Frag launcher, cyclic ion and a burst cannon all at once? LOL)

I'm new to Tau so I'm probably a bit clueless

Where they really shine is if you get a large unit (although any size unit works) and run them around with your Shas'O or Shas'El within a few inches. Not joining the GDs, just running around nearby. That's a lot of JSJ wounds to go through before your opponent can even try to target the commander.

And just a word to the wise, be careful Marine hunting with Vespids. That's not exactly what they're meant for. They're not a very good offensive unit. Except in Kill Team. Then go for it.

This a great tactic, and normally the best use of drones in combination with HQ suits. He is untargetable and unchargeable when surrounded, and doesn't have to shoot at the same target as the drones. The only risk is that a panic test in the drones can strip him of his defenses. Still, it is better than nothing. Another neat trick can be pulled off if you don't have a lot of Fast Attack choices. You can take three minimzed drone squadrons, and stick a Positional Relay on the commander. This allows you to stagger Deep-Striking units over the entire game. You can drop a tiny little scoring units reliably in turn 5 or 6, taking or contesting distant objectives and table quarters that your opponent had thought safely nailed down.

What kind of gear/weapons would you put on a commander with a drone escort?

I like to use a unit of 6-8 to deep strike and target the rear armour of tanks.

Using them as an Escort, I would go with medium ranged weapons, like CIB, Plasma, Burst Cannon, so he and the drones can put some serious hurt on a single unit, or you can always make him a Deathrain so you've got a good artillery suit with good protection. HQ deals with targets far off, Drones deal with infantry that gets too close. Even add a Fusion to him as a 3rd hardpoint and run him tank hunting using the drones as cover for the advance.
