Default Shas'o : Cyclic Ion Blaster: Is it worth it?

I'm working on my first army list for Tau at 1500 pts. In the process of picking equipment I came across a piece of equipment for the Shas'O commander. This seems like a souped up version of the burst cannon, that can lay down a lot of fire. But is it worth the extra points to equip him with that. What is a good setup for the Shas'O, assume I'm working with a hybrid army and I dont know what my opponents play.

Statline edited out. Don't worry, everyone here should already know the stats. - Khanaris

first, don't post the stats for weapons.

secondly, I have had a bit of success with it (but only used it in 3 games) you get a decent amount of shots from it, and they can take down heavy and light infantry (heavy being anything with a 3+ save)

however, if so then give him either a plasma rifle or burst cannon. (and prehaps a couple of gun drones for good measure if you have the points)

It is a nice weapon. Fantastic against light infantry but with the ability to occasionally punch through Terminator Armor with its special rules. I would always take it over a Burst Cannon, and a Shas'o or Shas'el with a Targeting Array can make the best use of it for the points. If you like being up close with your commander, and if you already have anti-light vehicle duty covered, it is a good weapon to take alongside a Plasma Rifle instead of the ubiquitous Missile Pod.

I use it too. My shas'el has the CIB, a plasma rifle and a targeting array. I like the combinate and has had some good results with it.

* I personally like the weapon, 5 shots will chew through any hordes, and if you add a Burst Cannon you have 8 shots, making it the only infantry model with that many shots (I think).* The only drawback to the CIB is the range (and strength...but lets forget that), and that is open to interperatation, depending on what you are equipping him with otherwise.

I'm a fan.

It falls in between the range of regular AP2 plasma (24) and plasma rapid fire (12), having 5 or 2.5 the number of shots (respectively) at half the S, but possibly with the AP.

Great flex-weapon, IMO.

As others said, not quite necessary on a Shas'O - you can always make a Shas'El shoot like a Shas'O while saving 15 points - it's called the targeting array.

CIB chances to wound @ BS5 against .
T3, 5+ saves - 5*5/6*3/6 =2.08333 wounds with no save
T3, 4+ saves - 5*5/6*3/6 =2.08333 wounds with no save
T4, 3+ saves - 5*5/6*2/6*.5 = .69444 + (.69444 *1/3)=.9259 wounds after saves (includes possible AP1)
T4, 2+ saves - 5*5/6*2/6*.5 = .69444 + (.69444*1/6) = .81018 wounds after saves (includes possible AP1)

Bursct Cannon chances to wound @ BS5 against
T3, 5+ saves - 3*5/6*5/6 =2.08333 wounds before saves
T3, 4+ saves - 3*5/6*5/6*3/6 =1.04166 wounds after saves
T4, 3+ saves - 3*5/6*4/6*1/3 =.555555 wounds after saves
T4, 2+ saves - 3*5/6*4/6*1/6 = .27777 wounds after saves

CIB point efficiencies
T3, 5+ saves = 15 points/ 2.08333 wounds = 7.2 points per wound
T3, 4+ saves = 15 points/ 2.08333 wounds = 7.2 points per wound
T4, 3+ saves = 15 points/.9259 wounds = 16.2 points per wound
T4, 2+ saves = 15 points/.8108 wounds = 18.5 points per wound

Burst Cannon point efficiencies
T3, 5+ saves = 8 points/2.08333 wounds = 3.84 points per wound
T3, 4+ saves = 8 points/1.04166 wounds = 7.68 points per wound
T4, 3+ saves = 8 points/.555555 wounds = 14.4 points per wound
T4, 2+ saves = 8 points/.277777 wounds = 28.8 points per wound

So there you have it, the burst cannon is much better against standard GEQ and slightly better against standard MEQ. While the CIB is much better against TEQ and slightly better against GEQ with a 4+ save.

So I'd say the burst cannon is more functional against the majority of enemies you'll encounter, but the CIB is better against armies with a lot of 4+ saves(Tau) and against the odd terminator. So I'd say it is worth it to take the one available to you.

*** A note on how I did my AP1 calculations - Since the roll to wound is 2/6 on both of the calculations which AP1 would affect. I assumed that half would be rolled as 5's and the other half would be 6's. So I simply took the total amount of wounds(before saves) and multiplied it by .5 The resulting number was the amount of AP1 non savable wounds and the other half were the wounds the enemy got saves against.

I'm a big fan of a CIB and PR or a CIB and BC (both on a Shas'El with a TA)depending on what I need in the list.

Its got a lot of shots out there and making your opponent roll means he'll eventually have to fail unless he sacrificed something large to the dice gods then you've still got that odd AP1 that can save the day.

The flaw in using pure point-efficiencies, though, is that you can not field an equal points-value of Burst Cannons on a Crisis suit. So it is kind of a moot point. We can field loads of Burst Cannons already. (That and the Pulse Carbine are the only weapons in the Tau armoury that can be taken by units in all five FOC slots, and the Carbine is only because Gun Drones have it.)

True, while it helps to compare relative strengths of the weapon, it leaves out things like flexibility and restrictions as you mentioned. ubt at the least it shows where the CIB is more useful over the BC and those calculations show total #'s of wounds against various enemies. Good useful information if you ask me.
