The first was based off the Codex, but the colours are diffrent. (I don't use citidal paints)

1# This is for the main forces, Tan yellow orange with blue armour plates, Tan gun with all gaps outlined with black, see-through red paint for eye lens and targeters. Gold trim on fusion blasters and plasma rifles...

2# For my 'stealthy' forces, Dark grey brown for armour, very dark blue (navy) clothing (pathfinders) black for XV15. Cyan blue trim on XV15 weapons, see-through red paint for eye lens and targeters...

Tau look great with very clean, unified color schemes. My first army was black and red, and the army I am working on now is black/grey with Scaly Green. You really only need two dominant colors, one for the armor and one for the underarmor. The armor color will dominate units like Crisis Suits and skimmers, and the underarmor will show up in accents.

(must be the thousandth time i've typed this up, heh...)

I paint each unit a distinct set of colors, but I retain the scheme each time.

Each model has four, at most five, colors:

-the first color is a dark shade of something, which goes on the undersuit, seams between the armor plates, and select armor panels on vehicles and XV8s (regal blue, dark angels green, scab red).

-the second color is the lighter shade of the first color, which goes on armor panels (ice blue, snot green, blood red).

-the third color is always chaos black. This is used for the machinery bits of the guns, arm joings and back of the leg for XV8s, and undersides of vehicles, etc--I thin the paint just a little bit with water to obtain a matte look.

-the fourth color is either Shining Gold or Boltgun metal (commanders, honor guard, and other prestigious individuals get gold), to pick out metallic details or bits that I want to have shiny.

-Sometimes there's a fifth color, usually skull white, which I use to paint the helmets of Fire Warriors and XV8 suits, to retain a real sense of unity in my rather diversely colored army. I sometimes imagine that Guardsmen would talk at night round a drinking table of the frightening "whitecaps", and I chuckle a little bit.

Since the Tau have the mecha/anime Gundam look I use 2 schemes (for 2 different armies)

First is the metallic scheme.

I use boltgun metal as the main colour (all amrour is painted with boltgun).

I use Mithril silver for highlight.

I also use Shining Gold to add some variety

I finish with bllod red for the eye peice.

For the Gundam scheme

I use Skull white was to colour the armour

Bleach bone for highlights

I use enchanting blue for the shoulder pads

I bit of blood red for the middle dot (on chest armour).

And I finish with Snot Green for eye piece.

Try looking at the other painting styles the codex has to offer you, some of them look pretty good. They also give you details on the amount of a color needed to create the desired effect.

You ask for advice on original paint themes? Why Just come up with your own colors and go with it. Somebody else has already tried it. So it will only be as original as you make it.

Oh, my God. That hurt my brain so much. Please try to make an effort in the future to make a coherent post. Here are some links to camo patterns.

If you want something even more uniqe, I suggest you look at old WWII German camo designes that they used on their plains and armor. Thiar are some great designes. Plus, this should really be in the hobby forums, not here.

my paint scheme i've been trying is regal blue for armor plates, space wolves grey for higlights, with a really REALLY whiten downed codex gray (any one know a better color... like is there a lighter grey?) and i add a lil BRIGHT yellow for the sept markings, and anything that just looks too bland.
the yellow REALLY pops!
and the navy looks pretty sweet, right next to that white/grey on firewarriors, and suits >
