Default The Ethereal Effect

In "What is the Greater Good Anyway?" we began to think about the Ethreal effect on the Tau empire?

What effect do the Ethreal have on the Tau?
What is their role in the Empire?

The ethereal caste are like loving fathers to the tau - respected for saving them from extinction, looked up to because they hold the ideals of the Tau'va to the highest priority and revered for their wisdom.

And no mind control.

indeed the mind control/phermone effect- was dissolved in the new codex. Although it hints something in Xenology the new rule backs up the fact that there are not phermones (of course you also have an Earth caste scientist that scoffs at the idea).

The Ethereals are shephards to the Tau'va, no one knows where the Greater Good ends but they know that the Ethereals will guide them through the darkness= respect.

No, it's more than respect... if it was down to simple admiration, then Shas'O would have the same special rules as an Aun; if someone who preaches can have that effect, then someone who embodies your role in the Tau'va would be even more impressive.

The Aun have a dark side... the Tau do not follow them as willingly as they believe.

As far as I am concerned, this will never hold true. Tau are good.

Although, until GW says something, all we will ever have will be fan based speculation, usually dividing into the two camps. Ah well.

Its pheremones I tell ya....a mind controlled drone sneering at the theorydoesn't overly strike me as significant evidence against it....

Never! Fellow Tau, hear not the words of slaves to a corpse, they speak untruth!

Ahem. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the pheremones are an aspect of their "control", maybe calming, and making sure they are listened to, maybe even going so far to tip the scales in the Aun's favour, but I can't see how they would completely control them... they would have to be insanly strong. And isn't there stuff about how humans are calmer around them? I know I've read it somewhere, so presumably, the pheremones just calm and make them listen to reason.

Well obviously they don't have complete control... Just look at Farsight and Brightsword and we can see that...

I don't like how the Tau are so "good" though... and I can appreciate why people like Wargamer try to make them less so. This "Goodness" just doesn't fit with the overall theme of the 40k universe, there has to be some sort of secret that could destroy everything the Tau stand for...

I was thinking more along the lines of chewy nougat and Eldar icky bits.
