Default So what is the Greater Good anyway?

I thought of this question today just randomly - it just popped into my head

What is the Greater Good? ???

I know that its what the Tau fight for, but what is it?
Is there any GW fluff about it?

My definition of "the greater good" would be in the sense of working together for the good of the tau empire or is it deeper than that.

Your thoughts are much appreciated

That is pretty good description of it. I'd say it is giving up ones desires for the needs of many.

All Tau fluff supports this ideology. The Greater Good is exactly what it says, the good of the greater society over the desires and needs of the individual. Its a simple philosophy really and its been the basis for many types of communist societies and governments but none have been able to function fully to the ideal. But the Tau are not human and seem to be capable of creating such a society.

Almost all Tau fluff points towards this in some way. The actoins of the individual being done in service of the greater good of the society. This can be seen in Firewarrior and Kill Team most notably. Coldwind is willing to sacrifice himself and his career to benefit the Greater Good of the Tau Empire in keeping Brightsword from entangling the empire in a drawn out and costly war, Kais gives himself to the Mont'au in order to protect the others, he faces the horrors so no one else has to. Its the ideology behind the organization of the Tau Empire.

So is it the Ethreal influence that inables the Tau Empire to function like this?

Yeah, I think it's definatly them. In the codex it says that before they showed up the Tau were about to become extinct due to civil war. That's why they are so important to the tau empire

However, don't make the mistake of thinking that every Tau would immedietly start killing each other once out of an Ethereal's range. Times have changed since the civil - war days. Tau society is very much centered around the Greater Good. The Ethereals are a huge influence, but not an all important one.

Is it some form of pyhsic link? I think this may have been suggested in the codex...

Also I think the Ethreals are almost all important - there is a good chance that the Tau would revert to their old habits, and with all their new technonlogy then a civil war would be more destructive.

I think that the Witch Hunter codex suggests that the Ordo Hereticus belive that the Etherals have some form of psychic influence on the other tau. This would, however, not sit well with the whole bit where they explain that the Tau almost have no presense in the warp at all.

I don't think they mean that the Etherals hold everything together by means of psychic influence, rather they are the glue which hold the Tau social structure in place.

"The greater good" is just plain, good ol' socialism on a good day, and the reason why it holds together and works is simply because there has never been a real alternative since the civil war. Socialism, as it was originally meant to be, is not really a system intended to function side-by-side with capitalistic ones, so without this disturbance I think it might work a lot smoother.
