Default Optimal Squad Size

I was wondering whether the prefered size for footslogging, pulse rifle toting fire warrior units was 6 or 12 (The obvious 2 choices) or maybe something in between?

2 units of 6 gives me more flexability but a single unit of 12 needs to take more casualties before taking a panic test. On the other hand, if I fail the test for a bigger squad I lose more guys.

Sorry if this question has been asked before. I tried the search function but it seemed to keep coming up with entire pages of posts with 0% relevance.

This is not an original idea of mine but a multiple of 2 maximises the proportion of models to be kill before the unit is below half strength. This important for both victory points, regroup, -1 leadership mod and claiming objectives.

A unit needs to take 25% or more casualties to take a leadership test thus a multiple of 4 minimises the number of models to be killed before a leadership test, this is bad.

This leaves the options of 6 and 10.

In my opinion a smaller unit is better;
-Claims more objects
-Allows you more choice in targeting
-An enemy unit that is forced to target but a single squad may be forced to overkill
-Less losses due to leadership failure
-As horrible as it sounds, the reality of enemy assaults a smaller squad is more likely to all die or run off hopefully leaving the would be assaulters starting down the barrel of a well sized barrel.
-mix/maxing

I take units of 6.

I mix and match in my army.

A few units of 12 and a few of 6. This is so that I dont have to waste any shots at any given unit I fire, and allows me more manouvers if the enemy comes to close to me lines (just leave the 6 man up front and move the 12 man way back)

2 squads of 6 models in front of the enemy and 1 squand of 12 models in the back ready to annichilate the assaulting enemy squads

eh, if you do the math the break in squad size effeciency is either 9, 10, or 12. Anything else is a reduction. Use the search function, because there are probably 6-10 threads discussing this going back years.

I have 2 squads of 14 (12 fire warriors & 2 Gun Drones) & 2 squads of 12 (10 fire warriors & 2 Gun Drones). The Gun Drones act as nice meat shields.

i'd rather have squads of 12. lots of shots, and since tau aren't uber-marksman (hences the 3 BS) you need a lot of shots to dmg the opponent.

but on the other hand, 2 teams of 6 ea with a markerlight (4bs if they work together) would also be strong. but quite expensive (bout 40 pts extra per squad).

i like the 12-man squad with 10xP-rifles and 2xP-carbines. the 2 carbines are for the extra pinning tests if an enemy comes in too close. in games i use my FW teams for fire support while my crisis and stealth teams capture objectives and the like.

for some reason (unknown even to me) I like unconventionl squad sizes and am experimenting with 8 man squads soon, however, the tem man squad is a good choice

How are the drones "meat sheilds" when they cost exactly the same number of points as a firewarrior and have the additionally liability of being removed if the shas'ui is killed?

Personally I don't much use ground pounding fire warriors but when I do i favour the 85 point squad - 6 firewarriors, shas'ui, markerlight and hard-wired target lock.
