Default Tau jetpacks

Why did the GW boyz give Tau Chrisis and Stealth (and Commanders, of course) suits jet packs? The only relevant change is that you can shoot one particular weapon type even if you moved. If there's another change, I've failed to see that. Jet packs and other Jump infantry move the same rate, although in different Phases, and as you can already shoot Rapid fire weapons even if moved with the suits, why the hell do they have jet packs instead of being normal Jump infantry? It's like the same change twice...

Do you know the rules:
The Tau jetpacks allow you to move twice. Once in movement, second in CC.
So move out of cover, shoot, back to cover.

With the normal jump packs you can move 12" actually.

And how many inches can the jet packs move a turn? I think it's 12 too, 6 in the Movement and 6 in the Assault phase.

Sorry I thought you mean jump troops move the same way infantry does.
Well, the important difference is splitting the movement into two phases.
You'll like it if you've played it a few times.

Ok, my main point was that the suits can already shoot Rapid fire weapons even if moved. Thanks for the clarification, spacecooky.

You're misguided on your Jump rules and misguided on your Tau tactics.

Jump infantry:
May jump up to 12 in the movement phase or move as normal infantry..
Assault as normal infantry.

Jet Packs:
May jump up to 6 in the movement, or move as normal infantry.
Assault as normal infantry, or may jump again up to 6 in the assault phase.

A 12-inch jump move in the movement phase offers far more mobile flexibility than our jet packs.
But our ability as Tau to move in the assault phase, whether or not we are assaulting (and we're usually not), gives us the ability to move, fire, and get out of sight so no return fire can be mustered.

I'm sorry, that Jump infantry issue just puzzled me and wanted to ask people if they knew what I didn't. No need for further sermons, lesson learned .

Something I myself can't remember at the moment:
Can a jet pack-equipped model still assault if it fires a rapid-fire weapon (plasma rifle?)

Yes. If your talking about assualting as in CC then I'm not sure. I'm guessing you can if you can do the jump assualt after firing.

I meant, can a crisis suit that fires a plasma rifle assault an enemy in close combat during the assault phase (I do realize you can only assault what you fire at).
