Default Crisis teams, wargear and shield drones

consider these two different crisis squads:

squad 1: 3x basic fireknife = 186 points

squad 2: 2x basic fireknife + fireknife team leader w TA, HWMT, HWTL, HWDC and 2 shield drones = 236 points

okay, so the second squad has some obvious advantages: it can engage two units at once, it'll score an extra 1/3-2/3 of a hit, and it's got 2 extra wounds (effectively 4 against heavy weapons).

my question is, is it really worth it? 50 extra points is ~27% or the value of the unit. that sounds an awful lot.

toning it down a bit to just team leader and drones, that's still 35 points or ~19%.

what do you think?

Think of it like this,

You're spending more points, but you get the ability to have a more effective fire knife (due to the TA) and you get the bonding ability regroup when you're down to a suit and a half. The thing is, those two Shield Drones, while expensive, do a lot of work at keeping your suits on the board at critical moments. Normally, two missiles or two lascannons would have removed two fireknives. Now, those two shots are more likely to only remove the shield drones, and not even both of them right away since they can actually make a good 50/50 save against them--and they combined, cost less half the cost of a single fire knife.

I would call it a wise investment in the preservation of the unit, which directly translates into more firepower from them--due to longevity.

Sure, it can still be beaten with just raw dakka power.
And it won't save you so much in assault.
But it does a lot in terms of making your opponent dedicate more firepower to destroy them, or waste firepower trying to do so with single high powered shots (which the drones take like troopers).

Unless you're absolutely strapped for points, definitely take Shield Drones on full suit squads like this.

Cheers!

I think it has to go with your strategy!

If you want to be mobile, use shield drones

If you want to keep your enemy at-bay, use marker drones

And if you want to use the killing blow, use gun drones

If it doesn't work with your strategy, it won't work with your army

Mal, Would it be worth it thought to be able to split fire like that? I would think that it make more sense to fire everything at one unit as opposed to split it, even if the fire is coming from a FK team leader with TA.

Heya,

I'm not entirely certain what you're referring to, but if you're asking about the target lock added in there, it's not a bad idea. The unit will generally be better off all concentrating fire on the same target, as well as other units helping them do that very thing. But a target lock can be useful sometimes, such as when you do not need to unload the entire squad upon a single Gaunt left standing, for example. It's not so that one can split up fire always--it's for the in-case moments.

Cheers!
