The reason I ask this is because a lot of online guides and other sorts say you can hide your HH behind trees and use your SMS and the troops next turn cant shoot you because you are behind terrain but I thought skimmers could only hide behind level three terrain, so whats the deal? also how does landing gears work? I did search and found nothing.

Skimmers can hide behind anything as big as they are. They hover over anything, no matter how tall, but only if the model is actually over the terrain. Otherwise they are next to, or behind, the feature.

In the case of Area terrain (woods, rubble), this means size category 3, as anything smaller will not completely obscure the skimmer.

In the case of What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get-Terrain (walls, hills, buildings), it means anything that is actually big enough to block all line of sight, physiclally, from the firer to the target.

See pages 16-17 for a description of the difference between these terrain types.

Trees are likely to be level 3 terrain, unless they are short trees. Some ruins are also level three area terrain.

In the case of a hill or an un-ruined building, you just bend down and look to see if there is a line of sight between the models. If not, you are hidden.

Landing gear, as you ask, can only be used if you did not move. You say, "now my skimmer is landed," and if you want to you can take it off its flying stand to show this.

When landed, it is no longer a skimmer. It is the same as a rhino or landraider, sitting on the ground. Nothing can see through it, or fire past it, unless it is tall enough to actually see over the skimmer model. Landed skimmers block line of sight, in other words.

Next turn, you can stay landed, or you can start moving again, in which case you go back to being a skimmer and using skimmer rules.

Tanks are size three, so when a skimmer lands, standing a model on a piece of size three area terrain will not let you see over the tank. However, if you stand on a piece of WYSIWYG terrain, and your model is now taller than the tank, then you can see over it. Also, if you had a model that was so tall it could see over the tank without standing on terrain, then it would also be able to fire over the landed skimmer. But otherwise line of sight is blocked by a parked skimmer.

Unless you model your skimmer with very tall flying stands, a parked skimmer will block line of sight to/from a flying skimmer because you use the real line of sight. But it is possible that a hammerhead with a tall base could see over a parked devilfish. The fact that they are both size three is not considered, as that only matters when considering area terrain or firing across models locked in close combat.

Hope this helps,
Gram

About the landing. lets say you stay stationary, and land, would you still be able to fire heavy weapons? (eq. SMS)

Beg your pardon? Any vehicle which moves less than 6" can fire such weapons. Take a look at the rule-book, there's a reference page just before the index. It has all the useful tables in the game. At the bottom of the first half of the reference tables is the one which tells you how many weapons vehicles can fire.

The SMS counts as a "defensive weapon."

Best,
Gram
