I have several discrepancies
with the current Tau rules, and while I understand these may have been done for the purposes of balance I still find them rather idiotic considering the characteristics of the Tau race. The first thing that bothers me is the BS of 3 for most of the Tau. For a race like the Tau that specializes in long range combat you would think the infantry would be very proficient in shooting... But no, they aren't even at the level of Space Marines. The second thing is the strategy rating of 1. For a race that is more advanced than everyone, save the Eldar perhaps, you would think that their mental prowess would match their superior technology. But no, they are classified as being at the same tactical level as the Orks. That's pretty much all I have to gripe about for now. Maybe I'll add some more things later on. <br / >EDIT: Wow, I could've sworn I was in the Tau forum when I made this thread. Mods, please move. |

the Bs4 is for game balance reasons...and if you want fluff to back it up, think of
this: marines live for hundreds of years...your average vetern marine would be like 300 at least...and he still only has Bs4. so why would a fire warrior have the same level of skill?? and the lower startegy rating: humanity has been at war for over 10000 years. they have had time to perfect their tactics...tau are only a new race, wiht fewer martial traditions, so go figure

Tau have BS3 as
thats the best you can get with training. SMurfs are super-elite, trained, and have technology to aim accurately . Look at the conscripts: worse than normal gaurd, IIRC. And the bolt gun is not a "cannon" its a "Rocket Propelled Grenade" and THEY ain't very accurate... but Bolters are rifled, and so, are. Besides, if they all ahd BS4, they'd cost more. And since they can already throw out massive firewpoer, its fair.

I look at it like
this, 1 to 1 the Space Marines and the Tau should score the same number of wounds ( statistically) against eachother. They have to roll a 3+ to hit and a 4+ to wound, we have to roll a 4+ to hit, and a 3 + to wound. The only real difference is the armor saves, and that works out in the point cost, I can field 3 FW's to 2 SM's and they armor save (statistically) 67% of the time, and we armor save 50% of the time, so they save 17% more of the time at a 25% increased point cost. If you were to boost the Tau BS they would then be MORE effective at shooting vs space marines at a point cost 1/3 less than a SM, that would be way to unbalancing, unless you raised the FW point cost to 15 per FW. Then when you look at basic troops of Orks, Dark Eldar, Eldar, etc they don't get a saving throw against Tau or Space Marines, so the space marines are 17% more effecient in kills in a 1 to 1 comparison, but again, for the same number of points we can field 25% more guns, making Tau FW, in essence, the best shooting squad in the game when you consider point cost, BS and the power of the standard issue pulse rifle. An example? Certainly. 6 Man Tac squad (90 points): Shots Fired: 6 Chance to hit: 67% Hits: 4 Chance to Wound: 50% Total Wounds: 2 9 Man FW Squad (90 points): Shots Fired: 9 Chance to hit: 50% Hits: 4.5 Chance to Wound: 67% Total Wounds: 3 So point for point we will score one-third more wounds than an equivalent SM squad, making is the most effecient shooting infantry ![]() I' ;m not sure I had a point, I just wanted to do the math on that.

Actually, marines hit on
3+ and also wound on 3+, while the Tau hit on 4+ and wound on 3+. Marines are significantly more accurate. |

To the statement of
Marines living a long time and humanity being at war for 10,000 years: This is a valid point, however if the Tau can mentally evolve so rapidly you would think they could just as easily learn to shoot well and plan well really fast. |

I think we're all
takin the fluff a little too seriously. After all it is just a story. Tau work in the game, ant that is whats important.
