Default Commanders

would you think that it would be reasonable
to mount a commander in a devilfish? in
fire warrior
, El' Lusha, a commander, spent
the first battle talking to la'Kais by inter comm.

the commander would give a big Ld boost, and the
fish could have special weapons, and mabey a
command and positional relay.

No. Commanders are hard-bitten warriors that are the epitome of all that the Greater Good stands for. They would not stay in a devilfish.

Besides that, FW was a video game... not cannon fluff

I don't know. The Imperial Guard are currently the only army with a realistic command structure. For everyone else, the commander is just the biggest guy with the biggest gun or sword. In some ways, I would rather the Tau didn't stick all of their commanders in Battlesuits. It is hard to see how they find time to order their troops when they are jumping around all the time on the other side of the battlefield.

Epic has mention, I'm told, of Fire Caste commanders mounted in Devilfishes or superheavy equivilants.

I believe it's an orca in the game, too. In that case, I would find it believeable, as it seems correct that a commander could be in an air vehicle, if only to get a good view of the battle and better understand the circumstances.

well you have fluff vs. fun here, it is fluffier for the commander to be in an orca, but it is funner for him to run around the battlefield pawning enemy troops.

carapace armed commanders do make sense though.

Not really for Shas'os.

Shas'el, sure. But Shas'O? No, I just cannot bring myself to see it. Rigged Orca Variants: Sure, easy. Variant Manta with upper hold decked out as a command deck: Yup, that makes sense.

Comm relay from a starship: Again, perfect.

But running about in carapace armour...

Would the Commander be in his Battlesuit or not (if he is, that would have to be one huge Devilfish--the XV8 is twice as big as the Devilfish door)? You didn't really state which, but I'm going to go ahead and assume you meant without the armour.

So what this looks like to me is basically an Ethereal (or a Shadowsun based on the apparent leadership abilities) with a AV ranking. However, I don't really see the point to it. While of course, it gives you some highly mobile leadership bonus, it's nothing an normal XV8 Commander can't offer (albeit probably a few inches less range). Take advantage of the guy's independent character status, and let him fly off doing his normal business. With his assault part of the J-S-J he has the same movement as a Devilfish, and this way he can actually use his own weapons (we really don't need some Devilfish with huge guns, as that's what Hammerheads are).

Now this would actually make more sense, as it probably happens in real Tau war (as full XV8 Battlesuits can fit in Orca's). A Commander taking a quick peek at the battlefield and the situation, allowing him knowledge of where his opponent's are attacking from, and with this he can improve the tactics he's fighting them with.
