Default Darker side of the Tau... or naive good guys in a dark universe? Your Favourite

Well, there will forever be the ongoing debate now, thanks to GW on whether or not the Tau are good, or darker. I don't mean chaos Tau, but whether the insinuations about Vespid mind control and the ethereal chemical control are true, and the Tau are no different to the other self centered dark races in the game, or do you prefer the Tau to be the one shining ray of hope in a dark and twisted galaxy?

Myself, I prefer the Tau to be good, as their general naive niceness is what made me play them in the first place, and I was a bit peeved when the chemical/vespid mind control was hinted at, as that was not why I played them.

What about you lot? Which do you prefer?

I am convinced the Tau are the Good Guys. If GW takes another approach I will be very disappointed.

I just think it's so much nicer having them as the good guys, naive as anything, but trying to make the galaxy a better place. I'm not against it being dark and dreary, I just want the Tau to stay different. I'll be mighty peeved if GW changed it.

Whilst I really really dislike the idea of Ethereals mind controlling fellow Tau (the Vespid are another matter), I tend to look on the dark side of Tau nature. The obliteration of all races that fail to join them (or ally with them) cannot be described in any other way then evil. Their natural arrogance is also rather evil. This quote sums it up well. "The Tau had chosen this world for their own. It was inevitable as sunrise". I can't deny that they are the nicest race in the 40K galaxy, but I still like to consider them as Maoist/Communist extremists.

Thats one thing I dislike about the new dex material. Before, if a race refused to outright join, then the Tau would set up non-agression/mutual help treaties, and trade routes/franchises etc, until they were either slowly brought in to the Empire, or decided to get full membership. I loved the idea of full member races, and then like part member races. Now, if they don't join, they die. I hate this, to me it is not the Tau way.

I love the Tau having a dark side... I'm sure you can tell that much from my stories.

Thats one thing I dislike about the new dex material.

It's not just in the new Codex that this attitude came about. The sunrise quote I mentioned was from the old Codex. It dosen't actually appear in the new one. The Imperials didn't submit to the Tau, so they were slaughtered.

it must be noted there are 2, possibly three races that are exterminated on sight.

the first are tyranids. the y'he. no one can argue with a zero tolerance policy here.
the second are orks. they're the guys plauging the tau since they first got into orbit. they are utterly inimicable to what the greater good stand for, and will destroy all that the tau strive for, jus' to 'ave a laugh, like 'n' krump sum spoon'eads.
the third, and this is a minor race, the reek, who the tau have attempted to destroy when they come into contact with them.

humans can be lumped in with the orks. still, tau have had a fair bit of success with the gue'la so they're not gonna give up on 'em just yet!

Now, i do not see arrogance is them claiming a world. I simply see their enormous self belief that they are able to shape the universe.

Furthermore, the tau have a policy of "join us (tell benefits of joining empire), or do your own thing, but lets be friends and be able to trade and stuff, and if the other guy decides to fight us then we fight back." BFG fluff states quite explicitly how tau view other aliens. a lot of the ships in their fleet are built, designed and crewed by these aliens. tau will let a race join their empire for mere "thanks" in treturn, should that race be that appallingly primitive. no regular joe spud alien will be killed on sight for saying "let me see...." An ork will. A tyranid will. for obvious reasons. a lot of races join fully, or remain affiliated with the tau, most notably the demiurg. that wont change.

On the subject of the Demiurg, I cannot help but wonder if they're a part of the whole Eldar-Ethereal plot. After all, they convinced Ataloic to save the Tau from extinction at the hands of the Orks, and they gave the Tau their Ion-Tech, which saved their fleets from being blown up every time an Ork Escort flew past...

I like the idea that Alaitoc came and saved the Demierg- not that they saved the Tau (makes more sense).
