Default kroot shapers

I want a good force of 20 normal kroot in my army, but do I have to include a shaper along with them? If so, then thats all I need to know. But if I don't have to have one in my kroot unit, then would anyone suggest having them anywayz? Just want some general tips :-).

My 40k armies:

Tau- 2000pts.
space marines- 500pts.
tyranids- 200pts. (battle for mccrage )
Lost and the damned- 300pts. (just started)

Kroot are always in units of plain 20 w/ no AS in Tau thats the best and IMO the only way to play them (exepting kroot hound w/ spare points) you dont have to take a shaper and I will always advise against it, he costs 4 Kroot for G*ds sakes, there is no scenario I can think of that he is worth it in.

shapers are solid characters with 3 wounds and 3 attacks and do strengthen you kroot squads in combat but they are quite pricey . An upgrade on top of a normal kroot for 21 pts and they do stop your kroot units persuing broken enemys. it depends if you want your kroot units to be cheap or not .a unit of 10 kroot is only 70 pts but costs much more if you buy a shaper and they extra amour save.

10 Kroot fail moral checks real easy and take them after 3 casualties, not hard to do either. the no pursue thing is a gimp and he takes away 3 bolter shots or 6 RF bolters , bad juju I'm afraid. lots of modelling potential but no game potential.

not a kroot fan ey? well kroot have PLENTY of game potential. I have a whole army of them and yes they are soft but their infilterate ablity is great plus on a jungle/woodland board they get a 4+ save in cover due to thier fieldcraft.

dude, have you read any of my other posts? Im a huge kroot fan, I hate shapers though as they are mathematically, just bad! there is no plus to them.

I love kroot, and see no reason for the shaper other than this. If say you assulted and broke the enemy within the jungle terrain and they fled out, with the shaper you would remain inside in cover and could let the hounds do their thing, wich I do not remember their I but they should wipe most squads out now. Instead of pursuing into bad spots that is all I see as the advantage. They do get pulse rifle options so 3 shots with one and a longer range could possibly kill a few models but other tha that not sure about the cost. I take them now but might try a game without them for once, but hey, I also try to use kroot ox on ocassions. :P

lol, yeah, but the shaper takes away four boltgun shots for one pulse rifle then, gimme 4 boltguns anyday.

also you dont have to SA do you? and kroot have to take a Ld test to SA anyway.

the shaper just seems such a hefty upgrade for a squad leader. Most cases of upgrading to a squad leader - veteran seargant, exarch, shas'ui etc. cost aroud 10 or 15 points, but 28? for something with almost the same stats as normal kroot where it matters (WS + I), no thanks.

its not only the lack of stat line improvement but fire rate decreases too and SMurfs dont scoff at losing 3 bolters so neither should Tau.
