Default which is better to have

for a 500 pt army:

two groups of twelve FWs or four groops of Six FWs?

mind that the FWs are equiped with Carbines and Grenades (photon)

Bigger is better, go with 2 squads of 12.

2 of twelve is good, but carbines are worse than rifles in the new rules and photon grenades were a bad upgrade at the best of times.take 1 12 man FW w/ all rifles and shs'ui and 20 Kroot IMO, solid and can do almost anything ;D

definatley the bigger size, the squad will dish out alarger volume of fire and although the opponent has to split his fire less, fire warriors arent as tough as marines and will break a lot more easily if left in small squads, also make sure as a good rule half of your fire warrior squads are mounted in fishes!

my normal practice is to go with the 2 bigger units ,but in a smaller game the 4 squads forces your enemy to waste large shooting units on small squads (they may cause mre than 6 wounds) any extras would be wasted. plus it gives you they abilty to split your fire more if you need too.

the smaller squads may waste enemy fire but will die if they are hit. 10 bolter shots are guaranteed to kill enough to force a moral check youll be lucky to pass, 12 FW needs 3 kills to force check 6 needs 2 and 3 for 50% instead of 6.

Usually two larger squads are better for reasons others have explained.

If you didn't have the carbines, and wanted to be really mobile, I'd suggest 1 12 man squad and 2 6 man squads. The smaller squads "leap frog" each other while the larger one supports both. The goal of the two smaller squads is to get within rapid fire range on light infantry. This is just a different tactic for mobile infantry in smaller point games. I have used it very well in scenario based games against Guard and Gaunt heavy tyranid lists.

If you are playing heavy infantry or just a simple "Kill 'em all" game go with the two larger squads.

I think it matters on who you are fighting. Six man squads spread out would do well against Eldar, but I think 12 man squads would do better else where. Also against nids it might not be too bad in small games, but ususally you want as many fire warriors as you can pack in against nids.

the best way IMO to play FW in 40/40 (this is 500pts but I'm assuming its 40/40)

is IMO 2 Fish of Fury (12 FW in Fish=200pts, shas'ui is optional, use the FoF tactic, dunp in 12"Fish blocks charge etc.) squads and spend the last 100pts on something... drones maybe? or 2 gue'vesa units for tankbusters? I dont know what you do w/ the last 100 but its up to you. tailor it to yourself or ask me if you want to know what to take for a specific role.

this IMO gives you the opportunity to saturate marines w/ enough firepower while being able to get away, and you have tanks for tankshock vs guard .... the list goes on. if your going to be playing infiltrate maybe kroot? but tankbustas or at least some modicum of tankbusting ability is advised, Shas'el w/ fusion+MP maybe?
