Default Marker Drones

Someone said that Markerdrones could bounce around with a crisis team. I read my book and didnt see it said that they have jetpacks. That and its a heavy weapon.. did I miss something?

Also they said sniper drones could move around.. which I didnt see either..

Crack?

They can be attatched to a crisis team via a Drone Controler
They cannot move AND fire. Normal movement OR fire.
I believe they ARE alowed the special jetpack move in the assult phase(even if they fire), as drones use the movement type of their controlling model (Tau Jetpack).

Please correct me if I am wrong

Drones always follow the movement mode of their controller. If they don't have one (gundrone squadrons or vehicle-deployed), then they are jetpack infantry.

This means marker drones CAN in fact (even an earlier FAQ confirmed it) fire, and then move. But, like stealths with markerlights, you can't use it if you moved in *movement* phase.

Its like hit&run in super-robot-wars: they can fire THEN move.

And really, as long as you're not playing a super-assaulty army, you don't need to make a movement phase move, esp. if you infiltrate the marker with Stealths with a ML, too. Infiltrate to 18", and then shoot, mark, jump backwards. Continue.

The marker drones are good in units that usually tend to stay still. With broadsides they work wonders. With the advanced stabilization rule where they become slow and purposeful the broadsides dint move very fast. The assault move is enough to keep up with broadsides. Having two drones in the unit that give a bonus to hit works wonders.

With Crisis suits you have to be much more careful. If you move forward 6" and then assault move 6" forward then your drones can end up out of range. In a unit of eight suits its easy to leave one suit further back to maintain unit coherency. With a unit of three, not usually a good choice, although a unit of three Deathrains with two markerlights, is especially nasty.

Actually, everything you're talking about there is illegal, because as per the rules, if one member of the unit moves, all members count as moving. So you can't use ASS to move the BSs and leave the drones behind, because the drones have to move as well, also, if you get anything more than a 4 you won't be able to move full distance, as you can't move out of coherency at any time even if it's "just" for the shooting phase, then you move back into coherency.

And again, with your 8 suit unit, you can't leave some behind so the drones don't move and shoot them. It doesn't work that way. If one model in the squad moves, they all count as moving.

Also the drones type is "As Owner" so they stop being jump troops(jetpack) and become infantry, same as the broadsides.

They work ok with firewarriors, fit well with a stealth marker team (1 leader with target array and markerlight, 2 Shas'ui with drone controllers).

Seems a bit silly to put them with crisis suits. Perhaps a monat with twin-linked missile pods and a command control node, plus a couple of marker drones, might make a handy static support unit for the FW and Broadsides, able to relocate 6" in the assault phase?

But it's a shame to waste the crisis suit's extra move, usually.

Also if you have markerdrones in a Crisis suit squad you're going to lower their tougness value to 3 due to the majority toughness rule.

Do you really want crisis suits who get insta-killed by plasma guns?

Unit I use time-to-time: 3 SS, Team Leader with TA, ML, HWMT, Bonding, HWDC, 2x Marker Drones, then 2 SS with TL

It's handy because you get 3 MLs on one enemy unit, then the other 2 SSs can hit anything else that's within distance to be a threat. Also, if things get REALLY desparate, you can hit a unit within 18" with those MLs, 3 BCs and then let the other hurt fly in on the markers, then jump back your 6". Next turn, if the enemy's left, he can walk into 13-18" of you again, and again get hit with those 6 pulse shots and 3 MLs and get hammered again.

Thirty points for a drone is too much in my book. Yes the Networked markerlight is nice but with two FW squads with an 'ui, markerlight and HW TL. They markerlight for each other and you get more shots.
