Default Gun Drones

Right now i use my gun drones as a fast attack unit(so I can deep strike). But i have been wondering if it would be better to assign them to units. Does the drone squads massed firepower better than having the protection of drone escorts?

Since 4th edition, gun drones are terrible protection for Crisis suits, especially HQ suits. This is because of the problems associated with the majority toughness and mixed armor rules. They will often drop your toughness, and frequently you will be forced to remove the Crisis suits before the drones anyway (which also kills the drones). You are better off using them in squadrons, as far as I can tell.

I occasionally use two gun drones with my Deathrain suits. Because the drones outnumber the suits 2:1, they take hits first anyway. It leads to some confusion occasionally, but the store in which most of my gaming occurs uses a house rule that "drones work like they used to." Instead of using the mixed armor rules, we use the rules out of the old codex of allocating hits to the drones first, and working out the wounding on the suits and the drones separately. It doesn't work nearly as well as the equal-toughness-equal-save for the shield drones, but gun drones aren't supposed to provide as much protection, are they?

Without that house rule in play I doubt I'd use them at all except on my Deathrains and my Fast Attack squadron.

say, what about taking them with stealth suits? when i heard about taking 12 of them with a squad of stealths, i thought; "hey they get the bonus of stealth armor, add extra simmilar shots to the squad and pinning, plus a ton of wounds." or mabee i didn't but that's what i think now. i don't think i will do this unless i am in a tournament though, since i don't want to be labled a power gamer, but i will probobly play test them at least.

We lost out some defense with the loss of the "Wounds always assigned to drones first" bit. The "Drones take the shot" defense made sense too; not just in fluff, but for economic reasons too (crank out another mass-produced standardised drone vs train another trooper, and THEN equip him)

Back then, shield drones were a bit useless, since they had the same stats as gundrones, without the gun (shield instead but more expensive), while the gundrone was just as good at protecting its controllers, just, without the shielding systems. This was fixed though, now that they share an armor-save and toughness with their controller.

As for how to use'em, I prefer squadrons and vehicle-deployed myself.

Squadrons are very reliable; They can do anything a fire-warrior can do without the special equipments (markerlight or grenades), except with more movement and MARGINALLY better accuracy. You'll rarely see spectacular results with them, but you'll rarely see spectacularly bad results too. One of the better 'vanilla' unit picks out there, and cheap to boot.

Vehicle-deployed pairs of drones are a defensive thing mostly. Two drones per vehicle may not seem like much... but these things are utterly expendable. Yes, that's right. They're equipment for the vehicle, which means they're actually worth 0 points (just, uh, don't lose the tank they came on; that's where those points went). So detatch them and enjoy all the wonders of what a pair of drones can do.

Offensively? not much, that's for sure. But they work as a unit. This means they get to play with priority. Nothing like wasting those two heavy-bolters, lascannon and who-knows-how-many-bolters on a lousy pair of drones while those crisis, stealths or broadsides laugh at you behind them. Watch out for assault when doing this; you don't want the drones used as a consolidation 'range-boost', but if used right you can tie up a lot of crap with something that won't even give them any points.

Great for accompanying an IC; two pairs (don't join them, just follow behind!) provide an inexpensive and effective way to shield him from incoming fire.

So yeah, I use both the firing-squads and the protective escorts... just... without tying either of them to a unit. Makes for superb flexibility!

Hey, can't you only take 100 points worth of stuff from the armory.....so you could only get 10 Gun Drones to accompany your stealth squad? i am not sure about this so....yeah.

I ALWAYS give my pathfinder leader 2 gundrones. They bulk up the squad to 10, and absorb the initial casualties without loss of mklights, and keep the squad above half longer.

actualy, you give them all one support system, so give them all drone controllers. you can only take 2 drones per stealth

Yes all that is true but a full squad of them can do some damage to nid's or Eldar. They also make geat meat shields for your HQ units i've learned!
