Default Tau vs Mobile Eldar Army

What are good tactics against a mobile eldar army?

Of course we try and punch their transports, but if they get the first move, even our AP1 weapons glance (which makes no sense at all, but there you go.)

With wraithguard troops inside, they eat up just about everything in our army and is good and strong enough to pound our tanks with no reguard for our army value.

The Kroot are only OK against them, though the hounds do tend to have simo or initiative on their troops.

The big problem is that they get close and impersonal very quickly, and they have plenty that can crush crisis suits like tin cans.

any ideas?

Well I just finished a fight with the Eldar this after noon.

The best way to take out the transports is obviously with railguns. Counter the mobile force with Broadsides and hammerheads, just watch out. Remember if skimmers move 24 inches then they cant shoot. most of the armour they have is 5 so any pulse weapon will do. Warp spiders can be taken out with snipers or rail rifles. Ion cannons will do the trick. Target the tanks and transports with all your heavy weapons. I have a Barricuda so that adds some power but thats a different story. Now the Farseer is a problem, with the psychic abilities and wounds and saves and stuff watch out for that.

To sum it all up,
crisis- put fusion blasters, plasma rifles, and missile pods
broadsides- a couple squads
tanks- 2 rail guns, 1 ion cannon, skyray
FW- 2 squads
snipers- one squad
Stealth- two squads, fusion blasters
Shas'o- your choice
path finders- rail rifle upgrades markerlights w/devilfish
and finally
vespid- two squads

so have some fun perfecting that force and kick some Eldar tooshy!

I would say use Missile pods on the transports and the railguns on their actual tanks. Though if there are no actual tanks by all means, use the Railguns on their transports. The glancing only is a problem but think of it this way, you get the same thing for your skimmers! once their on foot just use pulse rifles, or the submunition. As for the psykers, Stealth suits can be quite useful against them. If you have a squad of 6 you can put alot of str 5 shots into him AND stay away from most of his powers.

Heya,

You'll actually find quite a large number of threads dedicated to this exact subject. Searching would be very helpful while you wait for replies. Mechanized Eldar isn't so impossible to beat. The key is not hard hitting high strength or AP values. The key is volume. We happen to be able to get quite a bit of a good number in terms of volume, without having to resort to only heavy support. So keep the following in mind:

Missile Pods - The universal anti-Eldar weapon. Lots of them, twinlinked, can bring down those nearly invincible skimmers that totally tricked out Eldar tend to have. The key is not penetration, the key is massed glances. The more rolls, the more odds you will actually get a good damage score, and not just something dummied down to a 1 or 2 and then ignored or something. The weapon also happens to murder pretty much all if their infantry, except for the 3+ saving types. You can field tons of missile pods in the elites. Twinlinked pods are relatively cheap. You can field as normal and just to town from the word "go." You can even take a few more and reserve them for deep strike, so that after he moves forward, you can deep strike around turn 2 and unleash more pods into that savory rear armor. Quite a surprise for him, if he thinks his skimmers are invincible when he suddenly has 4 glances coming his way (3x Crisis with linked Pods, they will arrive on turn two on a 2+ if you equip a Commander with a Positional Rely).

Ion Cannons - Ion Cannons are just like Missile Pods, but they also tear through the 3+ saving Aspect infantry. Not that you'll need to do that so much. The other good news, is that you can punch Wraithlords with Ion Cannons as well.

You may still need a Railgun if your fellow happens to take a full compliment of Wraithlords (I assume he does since he's using Wraithguard). That's where XV88's come in. Two of them will work wonders, just grant them two shield drones to ward off lance hits early on.

Everything else in the force other than those Skimmers and Wraithlords can generally be pummeled by normal infantry shots, ie: rapid-fire. Just spread out a bit. The more concentrated your force is, the easier it is for him to hide from you and focus into the middle of you. If you spread out with range, you can deny his non-Skimmer vehicles easy approach paths and of course, better sight on those Wraithlords if he has them.

just a few tips against eldar, Like everyone has said missile pods work very well. Ion cannons as well like was said previous to me they get those sneaky striking scorpions very well plus it's good against there tanks as well as it's three shots, the more volume of shots the better against there tanks, but that rule pretty much applies to all skimmers. if they are fielding swooping hawks, which not very many eldar players do, but if he does you want to keep your guys as far away from them as possible, do not underestimate there speed they are fricken fast.

Dont forget your universal utility railhead. Is excellent for taking out those clumped up aspect warriors ... and can help out your xv88s in dealing with those wraithlords in a pinch.

Not so sure if you'd want to waste a Railgun shot on troops, unless the models are really close together and there are no armoured targets. There are plenty of anti-infantry weapons available, so it may not be wise to use your anti-armour weapons on them too.

In my lists I usually pack at least 3 railguns. 2 on foot, and 1 mounted. That may contribute to my willingness to go submunition with the railhead.

In my experience, if the enemy has 4+ save, they are elite enough so that taking a hit by the subshot yields spectacular results.

Missiles, missiles and more missiles! After reading what you all said about them they work great! Not to mention the force I use to beat them up!

the question was not what should he take, it was what should he do. i say blow up their transports and use mobile units to distract so you can hammer them from behind with another fast unit. any seeker missles you have in your army list should be used by moving the vehicle in a place where you can get an angle on their rears. if you can draw them twords the back with things like broadsides you get a good chance of getting behind them. if you have firewarriors in a devilfish, i would hide it from all anti-tank squads and use them to counter move any aspect warriors that should spring upon your immobile forces. realy you can probobly win paying more attenchion to killing whatever comes out #1 and then the tanks #2 followed by the wave serpents.

obviously kill low deffence murderers like vipers and war walkers with extreme predjudice. make sure that you effectivly focus your fire to prevent units from assaulting your firewarriors.
