Default Are Cyclonic Ion Blasters good?

now, of course the stats are strait for the point cost, you could use them with a burst cannon for mobs or a plasma rifle for meqs or teqs but i want to have my commander be a constant annoyance for the enemy with the option of getting close for one hard hit. that's why unless points is a hard issue i always take a plasma, melta and missle pod. I like this set up because it has uses against all armies, whether killing marines and termies or stopping fast moving transports with the missles and melta. my problem with this gun is that it's use is limmited by range and only being able to kill a few enemies just about as well as a burst cannon, which i could take on a stealth team instead...

I use atm a Shas'O with Ninja'O setting with burst cannon and CIB. This has worked well for me.
Just today the commander him self inflicted 2 wounds on a Khorn over tooled demon prince. The third wound was made from a pirahna, and the last wound from a honour guard.

The commander also took out a champion host, and several khorn berserkers.

Against orks in an earlier game today, he was priceless.

Oh hell yes.Think of it this way.

In terms of guardsmen killing, its no better or worse than the burst cannon.

Against carapace armor or eldar 'mesh' armor types; its just as good as it was against guardsmen, since it has a higher AP. for this alone its already a big improvement.

Against MEQ and termies, its much, MUCH better, statistically second only to the plasma rifle if said rifle is within 12". This weapon is meant for them.

The lower strength is compensated for by a larger number of shots. The real power behind it is its slightly better AP, and occasional "AP1" effect.

While burst+plasma is somewhat questionable (plenty of better places to put a burst cannon; missiles are a much better choice in my opinion), CIB+Plasma with BS5 (I use a target-arrayed shas'el usually myself) gives you pretty much the best infantry-killing suit available, no matter what kind of infantry you face. Don't think of it as specialising; being good against ALL infantry and having a chance against light vehicles makes one hell of a versatile unit.

CIB+Burst gives a lot of fire, but I'm not sure its all that great: missiles would have better AP and power, with nearly as many shots and better range...

Our regular infantry can damage a 'fex or war walker anyways, and we've plenty of death-dealing railguns for tanks.

Welcome to the forums!

I like the CIB much better than the AFP for commanders, mainly because they get more benefit out of it. The more shots you can put out with your HQ, the more you are taking advantage of his higher BS. Since even Tau commanders don't see too much hand-to-hand in an ideal world, the higher BS represents a lot of what you are paying for by bringing him along. At the moment, I am liking the CIB and a Plasma rifle for most battles.

Cyclic Ion blaster is a very good all anit-infantry purposes, with six shot and with a chance of AP1 every army in my opinion this should be on every commander's battlesuit.

plasma rifles are good but i've killed alot more marines/guardsman/eldar with the other special issue, the Air frag projector. Just remember thats in your arsenal as well

I like the AFP, too, but I wouldn't put it on a commander. Since you don't need LOS or a high ballistic skill, my favorite use for it is on a mo'nat Elite choice in deep cover.

Yeah especially when your paying so much to give your commander a better BS.

Learn punctuation it changes the meaning of your sentinces. If you don't I'll destroy you.

I like them, the Ap1 thing makes them effective against marines and the 5 standard Ap 4 shots mean that it can mow down light infantry just as effectivley.

When you're hitting on 2s who could possibly say no to 5 shots? Its a very tasty weapon, only MEQs get an armour save against it, and even they don't if it gets its AP1 roll.
The other day I rolled 5 6s to wound against a sisters squad - no armour save! That will probably never happen again, but it was priceless.
Today the ion blaster inflicted three wounds on an enemy commander (as well as killing other things).
