Default Escalation re: new codex

Only new to tau and like everyone very new to new codex
I need clarification re what is available in omega games re escalation:
I know only infantry is able to set up in 1st turn
does that include broadsides ?
what if i take a devilfish with troops of pathfinders
IE how does one use the positional relay if most stuff is off the board ?

any help would be great

Broadsides are infantry with no special movement so yes they start. Pathfinders may also start (If it's with the Devilfish is a debate, but I believe so...).

I believe the Positional Relay is useless if not in play. You'll need your suit with it present in play to use it.
The suits being called in are in reserves anyways, and you may deep-strike in Omega so as soon as the Relay is available and Reserve Rolls can be made a squad can be called in.

Any unit, classed as "Infantry" in their Army List entry, and does not have a transport vehicle, starts the game on the board. Everything else starts in reserve.

Broadsides, Fire Warriors without Devilfishes, and Kroot start on the table. Crisis Suits, Gun Drones, and any Tanks start in reserve.

The positional relay needs to be on the table for you to make use of it, so obviously you would need the model carrying it on the table.

It's all explained in the codex and rulebook.. just read it a few times, and reread the appropriate sections and it should make perfect sense...

That's debateable, to whether you think the Scouts ability applies to the Devilfish, or just to the Pathfinders.

I asked GW this, and they didn't exactly give an answer...

It is not an upgrade. The Devilfish is part of the Pathfinder squad and you can't take a Pathfinder squad without a Devilfish. Where does this leave us? Who knows. I did have an opponent state that IG Sentinels also have the Scouts special rule and deploy as such. If a Sentinel, being a vehicle can do it, why not the Pathfinders Devilfish. Is this correct?

The arguement is that the Pathfinder Squad and Devilfish are separate entities. In the game, they are, they're two separate units that move independently of each other, each following their own rules. But in the Army List, they fall under one Force Organisation Chart Entry. The Scouts special rule is detailed in the Pathfinder Army List Entry, but not in the Devilfish one. So the question is, do we automatically assume the Pathfinder Devilfish is included, or if it is separate?

As can be seen in the link in my previous post, GW hobby service have not provided a definate answer (not even an unofficial one!)

Obviously though, it gets rather contradictory, with Pathfinders being allowed to start on the table due to Scouts, but the Devilfish not being allowed normally because it's a vehicle. Common sense would suggest that the Devilfish is allowed, and that the Pathfinder squad functions exactly as they did with the old codex.

There's still room there for either player to rules lawyer though, and as can be seen in past discussion on this topic... there are people out there willing to defy common sense and logic to argue against this.
