Default Who is the Shootiest? tau vs gaurd

Tau and Imperial Gaurd are undoubtedly the shootiest armies in the galaxy. Now is the time to decide who can out shoot who. As a Tau player, I can honestly say that I am naturally prejudiced towards the st5 ap5 pulse rifle, the crisis battlesuits, the st10 ap1 rail gun, and the fairly good armor saves, and the maneuverability of the Tau. However, the Imperial Gaurd have the ordanance, sheer numbers, rock-solid tanks, and massive array of weapons and upgrades available for the basic infantrymen that the Tau don't have. Unable to decide for myself, I call out to whoever's listening to tell me who you think can throw out the most shooty death, and why.

The IG and the Tau differ in the same way Khorne Beserkers and the Orks differ. They both have the same specialisation but they're used in different ways.

Based on my experience, the Guard with outshoot Tau 80% of the time.

Remember, the Guard may not have Pulse Rifles, but there's a lot more of them! Throw in their tanks (undoubtedly the best in 40K), and their unholy artillery, and the Tau are left wondering what the hell hit them.

I play Tau, and without a doubt the Guard are better at shooting. They can put out more shots per model over a greater area than Tau. Tau are surgical, the Guard a sledge hammer.

I know very little about the IG as i ahve neevr battled an IG player.....do they rely soley on tanks and artillery for firepower? if so does this mean they are weak when all their tanks have been taken out?

Not always. Guard vs Tau is generally a case of the Guard sitting back and pumping out an unholy number of shots. Lacking the manpower to match the Imperials, the Tau tend to suffer badly in such trade-offs, and the Kroot do even worse (a wise Guard player with blitz them with a platoon's worth of Lasguns and remove all chance of an enemy assault).

Imperial tanks are definately better than Tau ones, having better armour, and more versitile weapons (the Battle Cannon is brilliant against anything in the Tau army, though less so in the *spit* 4th Edition rules).

Also, learn to fear the likes of the Griffon Mortar. If a Guard player deploys that, it means two things:

1) The player is an experienced veteran, not some Cadian whiteshield.
2) Your Firewarriors are going to die.

The Tau need to put their speed to good use, focussing fire on priority targets to minimize the damage they take, and timing any offensives so they don't just get blown off whatever objective they're trying to hold (or, in really bad cases, the table...).

This is where Crisis suits come into there own with sheild generators. The guard are the one thing they can charge and kill- with a str of 5 they are popping guardsmen into the ground like tent spikes. But more on topic the guard can out shoot the tau, now if the tau were BS 4 I think that might change pretty quick.

Not really, as a Bs 4 Tau would cost 15-20pts each... and the Crisis Suits would be through the roof!

Being a Tau player, I'd obviously side towards Tau. But i'm not.
I'd say Imperial Guard can outshoot Tau only because of because of manpower.
If it was 10 Fire Warriors against Ten 'Guard, fire warriors would easily take it with Pulse Rifles vs Lasguns.

Let's say... Space Marines use Lasguns to ingrave their names on the back of their companys Rhino.
Jokes...

"Yeah, Commisar Bailey tried to execute me once with his laspistol, but all it did was give me a really nice tan."

I don't have much experience with guard, but I do know that as a general rule, the more dice being rolled, the more chance that they're going to be effective. (Take Kroot in CC for example, lol)
